Ticks still active in St. Lawrence County in late fall, early winter months
In St. Lawrence County, dealing with ticks is a regular part of life. While tick season is heavy in the spring and summer, ticks can be around year round. In fact, we have been experiencing shorter winters and warmer days overall. Changing climate patterns are likely to be a factor in making tick seasons more severe.
Winning Take-Five ticket sold in Malone
MALONE -- A Take-Five top-prize ticket was sold in Malone on Wednesday, according to state lottery officials.
The winning ticket, worth $17,211, was reportedly sold at Mountain Mart, 3414 State Route 11C.
Take 5 players with midday and evening draws on the same ticket must check their numbers at nylottery.ny.gov to determine if they have the winning numbers for the corresponding midday or evening drawing.
Holiday gift wrapping offered Dec. 3 at Police Activities League in Massena
MASSENA – Holiday gift wrapping will be available Sat., Dec. 3, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Police Activities League (PAL), 30 Bayley Road.
The gift wrapping is free, but donations will be accepted. There will also be a bake sale.
All money raised will go directly back to kids and PALS afterschool programming.

Pierrepont man accused of criminal possession of weapon
PIERREPONT -- A Pierrepont resident was charged with criminal possession of a weapon on Wilson Road Nov. 24, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies.
John C. Trombley, 37, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon after deputies assisted DEC police with an investigation, officers said.
Trombley was cited and released.

Two fundraisers will benefit veterinary clinic that burned in Louisville

MASSENA — Two fundraisers are planned to benefit Dr. Wilfredo Perez and the Java Veterinary Center.
Java’s Veterinary Center was a total loss following an extensive fire in October.
The first event is a bingo fundraiser scheduled for Dec. 3 at the Massena Moose Lodge, located at 4 Ames Street.
Doors open at noon with games slated to start at 1 p.m., according to the event’s Facebook page.
Clarkson professors win $1.43 million equipment grant from Office of Naval Research
POTSDAM — Dr. Craig Merrett and Dr. Marcias Martinez of Clarkson University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering recently won a $1.43 million equipment grant from the Office of Naval Research.
The grant will enable the acquisition of advanced material testing equipment for polymers, composites, and metals.
The equipment will extend the testing capabilities within the Center for Advanced Material Processing (CAMP), the Holistic Structural Integrity (HolSIP) Laboratory, and the Aero-Servo-Thermo-Visco-Elasticity Laboratory (ASTVEL).
St. Lawrence County caregivers, parents warned of winter car seat safety dangers for kids
It’s that time of the year where it’s getting colder and colder each day, causing us to break out the heavy winter jackets and snow suits. As parents and caregivers we want to keep our little ones warm, so we bundle them up in thick outerwear to defend them from the harsh winters.
While the coats and snowsuits will keep your children warm, it can also interfere with the proper harness fit of the child in their car seat. The St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Program would like you to help you understand the dangers of a coat under a child safety seat harness straps.

ARPA funds totaling $196,728 distributed to St. Lawrence County businesses, organizations
CANTON – Local businesses, non-profits and organizations in Massena, Canton, Potsdam, Winthrop, Lisbon and Morristown will receive $196,728 American Rescue Plan Act funding.
The St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency announced the funds are to be awarded to 18 businesses, non-profits and organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
