LISBON — A Celebration of Life for Richard “ Dick” L. Barkley, age 69 of Lisbon, will be held on February 11, 2023 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Quality of Life Building, 642 County Rt 28, Ogdensburg, NY. Mr. Barkley passed away on January 29, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Waddington student on Dean's List at University of Rhode Island

Lydia Maskell of Waddington has been named to the Fall 2022 Dean's List at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.
To be included on the Dean's List, full-time students must have completed 12 or more credits for letter grades which are GPA applicable during a semester and achieved at least a 3.30 quality point average.

Oswegatchie man charged with drug possession

OSWEGATCHIE — An Oswegatchie man was charged with drug possession on Haggert Road following a request for assistance from New York State Parole officers, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.
Craig M. Whitman, 44, was charged seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance after assisting parole officers with a home visit, deputies said.
Whitman was found in possession of a small quantity of methamphetamine, deputies said.
He was cited and released.

Wind chill watch issued for SLC Thursday through Saturday; wind chills as low as -45 possible

A wind chill watch is in effect from late Thursday until Saturday evening in St. Lawrence County.
Dangerously cold wind chills are possible with lows around 30 to 45 below zero possible, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Forecasters predict lowest wind chills will be between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes, NWS says. Have a plan for extreme cold conditions. Prepare your car for cold

Massena Central $49.6M capital project expected to be complete this fall

MASSENA — Phase three of the Massena Central School District’s capital project is well under way and on schedule.
The $49.6 million project is expected to be completed this fall, officials say.
Rob Gray from CNS, who has overseen the project, told the board of education that phase one has been completed and it is now just a matter of closing out documents and submitting them to the state.

Ogdensburg on pace for $200,000 shortfall in sales tax

OGDENSBURG — In the wake of failed negotiations with county officials, Ogdensburg began collecting its own sales tax, unfortunately the move is not proving particularly fruitful.
Early reports show that Ogdensburg City Council likely over-estimated sales tax revenues when preparing the recent budget.

Canton Central hosting community forum tonight to discuss adding $10.5M to capital project

CANTON — Canton Central School will host a community forum (tonight) Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the high school Library at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the need for voters to approve additional funds to complete the district’s capital project.
Residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the upcoming referendum vote requesting an additional $10.5 million to complete the capital project approved by voters in 2021.
The vote will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the high school library from noon until 8 p.m.
