United SteelWorkers Union and Arconic reach agreement in Massena, likely avoiding strike

MASSENA — A strike has likely been averted as the United SteelWorkers Union and Arconic have reached a tentative agreement.
Officials say the agreement was reached on Saturday, May 14, just a day before the previous contract was set to expire.
The tentative agreement is fully endorsed by the bargaining committee and is set to be voted on, though specifics have not yet been released, according to officials.
St. Lawrence County Arts Council (SLC Arts) presents free professional development workshop for artists
POTSDAM — The St. Lawrence County Arts Council (SLC Arts) presents a free professional development workshop for artists, on Wednesday, May 18, 5:30 p.m. The location is the Potsdam Town Hall community room, 18 Elm St.
In this class, Jennifer McCluskey, owner of McCluskey Photography LLC, will teach participants to photograph their work using both natural light and lighting equipment.
North Country students new members of National Leadership Honor Society
Six North Country students were initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, in April.
They are Virginia Hines of Canton, a student at Sewanee - The University of the South; Fato Kerma and Kelsea Whittier, both of Canton and both students at St. Lawrence University; Rose Arquette of Hogansburg, a student at SUNY Plattsburgh, Jillian Benedict of Hogansburg, a student at the University at Albany; and Hailey Clancy of Gouverneur, a student at Elmira College.
MASSENA — Yvette May Perry, age 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by all her loving children at the family home early Tuesday morning, February 1, 2022.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 7-9 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home 64 Andrews St. Massena.
A Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 10:00 am with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
MASSENA - Cynthia Campbell, most recently of New Port Richey, Florida, passed away on April 28th, 2022 having been in failing health for several years.
Visitation and a funeral service were held on May 6, 2022 at the Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Home in New Port Richey, FL.

Akwesasne officials report 15 new positive cases of COVID-19
AKWESASNE – The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s COVID-19 Response Team reported 14 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the southern portion of Akwesasne from May 10-13. There are 12 active cases under the Tribe’s jurisdiction.
The active cases include two toddlers between the age of 0 to 4-years old, and two teenagers.
