Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s gift shop surpasses daily sales record

OGDENSBURG – The Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary Gift Shop recently offered a one-day sale, featuring Vera Bradley items as well as Halia and Bauble Lu Beads, and took in over $5,700.
The sales represented an all-time one-day sales record for the shop since its inception back in the 1950’s.
Agnes Lightfoot, auxilian and Gift Shop co-chair, suggested two factors that may have helped boost sales.
First, customers spending $100 in total merchandise had their names entered into a drawing for a Vera Bradley Tote and matching ID case valued at $58.

Potsdam Fire Deparment holds chicken barbecue Sept. 11

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Fire Department will hold a chicken barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. until all is gone.
Whole dinners are $7.50, including a half chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans and roll.
A half chicken is $4.50.
Free delivery is available in the village of Potsdam.

Veils of the Nile dance troupe performs at Potsdam Farmers' Market Sept. 11

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Farmers’ Market will take on the feel of an exotic Middle Eastern bazaar Saturday, Sept. 11, when the Veils of the Nile dance troupe performs at 10:30 a.m.
The market shopping hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at its new location south of the Main Street parking lot, near the Clarkson Inn and next to Ives Park.
It offers seasonal fruits and vegetables, baked goods, maple syrup, local meat, pumpkins, local corn & tomatoes, peaches, apples, flowers, and wine.

Wounded Warrior Project jamboree to be held Sept. 11 at Massena American Legion

MASSENA – A Wounded Warrior Project Jamboree will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 at the American Legion, 40 E. Orvis St., beginning at 1 p.m.
The event is sponsored by the Massena Memorial Hospital Veteran’s Clinic, AMVETS, VFW, DAV, Marine Corp League, American Legion, Shriners, Moose Lodge, Elks, and Italian/American Club.
Attendees will receive a ticket for door prizes with donations at the door
Cross-country rollerblader and fundraiser Shawn Hatch will be on hand, and there will be raffles, 50/50 every hour, snacks and bands.

Potsdam's Clarkson Inn, at 25, hosting open house Sept. 17

POTSDAM -- The Clarkson Inn will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an open house on Sept. 17.
The community is invited the open house at the Inn, One Main Street, on Friday, September 17, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Inn has seen many famous guests pass through its doors during its two-and-a-half decade history, among them Adam Sandler, and Dennis Miller, who donned a wig and glasses to maintain his anonymity. Actor and Clarkson alumnus M. Emmet Walsh, known for his cantankerous personality, reportedly told a desk clerk to “go smoke a beer and drink a cigar.”

Riverside Brass Quintet performs in Gouverneur Sunday

GOUVERNEUR – The Riverside Brass Quintet will present a concert on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Gouverneur.
The quintet is relatively new, having been organized in the spring of 2009.
The individual members are highly experienced brass players, active as performers and educators throughout the region. All five also perform in the Northern Symphonic Winds.
Additionally, each one of the five has some connection with the Crane School of Music.

Crash Course in Capoeira I in Canton Sept. 11, Potsdam Sept. 25

A one day intensive introduction to the art of Capoeira will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Yoga Loft, in Canton, and Saturday, Sept. 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the St. Lawrence County Arts Council dance studio, Potsdam.
The price is $30.
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian ritual “dance/fight/game,” that explores the basic symbolic structure of the game through metaphors communicated in movement, rhythm, and song.
This is a three-part lecture and participatory workshop (with a break for lunch). All levels of fitness are welcome.

Potsdam lacrosse alum selected in professional lacrosse draft

POTSDAM -- Ben McCullough, a four-year member of the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team, was selected 13th overall by the Buffalo Bandits in the second round of the 2010 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft on Wednesday in Toronto.
McCullough, a midfielder from Brampton, Ontario, was a three-time All-State University of New York Athletic Conference performer during his standout career at Potsdam. He started all 15 games for the Bears last season, finishing among team leaders in points, goals and assists, and was named first-team All-SUNYAC.
