Verizon ordered to improve service to rural customers without alternatives

Consumers who must rely solely on Verizon for their telephone service, such as people in rural areas without cable or cellular service, might see a higher level of service quality.
In recognition that the New York State Public Service Commission's service quality regulations have not kept pace with the level of competition in the telephone market, the commission required Verizon to file a revised “Service Quality Improvement Plan,” and Verizon’s plan has been approved by the commission.

Local cable show to focus on how corporate control damages health of planet

Peak Moment TV host Janaia Donaldson “tackles corporate control and a dysfunctional system that profits from increasing unhealthiness and consuming the planet,” as the tables are turned and she is the interviewee during the program to be shown at 7 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21 on WCKN, cable channel 30.
Peak Moment explores positive responses to energy decline and climate change through local community action. Locally, the programs are underwritten by The Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University and the Seymour Family of Potsdam.

Norwood American Legion to hold kids’ Christmas party Sunday

NORWOOD – A Kids’ Christmas Party will be held Sunday, Dec. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Norwood American Legion, 10 Maple St. Santa, Mrs. Clause, Frosty, and Mr. and Mrs. Elf will visit.
There will be crafts, face painting, balloons, stockings, and a buffet of candy, cookies and punch. The event is open to the public.

Angelo's Fresh Seafood in Potsdam closes

POTSDAM – Angelo’s Fresh Seafood and Takeout, 43 Maple St., has closed.
Owner Angelo Landi, Jr. said the general economic situation and the oils spill in the Gulf of Mexico this year were factors in his decision to close the restaurant which also sold fresh seafood.
“The economy has been rough over he last year,” Landi said.
“And the oil spill tripled the cost of seafood. That’s an expense I didn’t feel I could pass on to the consumer.”

Rash of crashes reported in DeKalb, Brasher, Gouverneur, Oswegatchie, Lisbon, Pierrepont, Potsdam, Colton, Canton; 2 hurt

State police report ten property damage accidents Friday and Saturday in DeKalb, Brasher, Gouverneur, Oswegatchie, Lisbon, Pierrepont, Potsdam, Colton and Canton.
Two people were injured as the result of a two-vehicle accident at 5:45 p.m. Friday on St. Rt. 11 near the Orebed Roadin DeKalb. The driver of the first vehicle was Judson R. Durham, 44, of Hermon. The driver of the second vehicle was Ethan B. Bacon, 20, of DeKalb Junction.
No injuries were reported following nine other accidents, police said. The drivers of vehicles were:

A mass of Christian Burial for 84-year-old Mr. Raymond J, McGee of Colton and formerly of Potsdam will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with Msgr Robert Aucoin celebrant. Raymond died on December 17, 2010 with his family by his side. Norwood man builds airplane, takes two-hour maiden flight

NORWOOD – After five years, 3,000 hours of labor, and more money spent than he cares to admit, Robert Klein finished building his own two-seater airplane and took it for its maiden flight on Dec. 4.
