Voice of Democracy contest for 9th-12th graders held by VFW 1994 in Potsdam

POTSDAM – Post 1994 VFW and Ladies’ Auxiliary are sponsoring the VFW’s annual Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests again this year. Entry deadline is Nov. 1.
The Voice of Democracy contest is for audio submissions from 9th through 12th graders.
The theme this year is “Does my generation have a role in America’s future?” A vocal recording of three to five minutes of the contestant’s view of the theme

Cinema 10 presents “A Prophet” Monday evening

POTSDAM – Cinema 10 continues its fall 2010 season on Monday, Oct. 25 with a showing of “A Prophet,” or “Un prophète” a 2009 film directed by Jacques Audiard about the prison “education” of a young criminal.
Prisons are institutions of higher learning when it comes to training young criminals for lives in organized crime.
Thin and vulnerable Malik El Djebena is sentenced to six years in a French prison.
There, he is protected by a Corsican gang leader who sees Malik’s potential and teaches him how to climb the prison hierarchy through a series of “missions.”

Insight meditation offered at SLC Arts Council in Potsdam on Mondays

POTSDAM -- The SLC Arts Council is offering Insight Meditation with Roberta Paccione on Mondays, Oct. 25 through Nov. 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Dance Studio (Room 230), Downtown Snell Hall.
Rooted in the Buddhist style of vipassana, this class delves into metta meditation, exploring the quality of loving kindness including the traits of friendship, non-violence, patience, receptivity, appreciation, generosity, and kindness.

Clarkson settles for 3-3 tie with Bentley in men's hockey

With a three-goal lead heading into the third period, the Clarkson University Hockey team looked to be on its way to a weekend sweep of Bentley University, but the Falcons struck for three unanswered goals in the final frame to gain a 3-3 tie on the road before 3,104 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.
Clarkson (3-2-1) defeated Bentley (0-3-1) 5-1 on Friday in the first game of the non-conference series between ECAC Hockey and Atlantic Hockey foes.

UNH hangs on for 5-3 win over Saints in women's hockey

The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team got three goals from underclassmen on Saturday, but the University of New Hampshire used a pair of third period goals to defeat the Saints at the Whittemore Center in Durham, NH by the score of 5-3.
The win moves the Wildcats to 5-2-0 on the season, while the Saints fall to 1-4-1 in non-conference action.
"New Hampshire outworked us in many areas today," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "I did not have us prepared for the game. We have a solid week now to prepare for our first league competition next weekend."

Carey has hat trick as Saints, Broncos tie 3-3

Junior wing Greg Squires scored a power play goal from the center point with eight minutes to play in regulation time to tie the game at 3-3 and goaltenders Nick Pisellini of Western Michigan and Matt Weninger of St. Lawrence kept it that way through the rest of regulation and overtime as WMU and St. Lawrence skated to a 3-3 draw at Appleton Arena Saturday night.
The Broncos ran their unbeaten streak to five games since an opening loss at Canisius and are now 4-1-1. St. Lawrence is still searching for its first win at 0-3-3.

Roos edged by Machias 2-1 in women's soccer

(Nashua, N.H.)- The SUNY Canton women's soccer team lost to the University of Maine at Machias 2-1 Saturday in Nashua, N.H.
The game was played at Rivier College and the two teams will meet there again on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Angie Waryasz (Lowville, N.Y.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to lead the Roos, who fell to 4-5 in the Sunrise Conference and 6-8 overall.

(Nashua, N.H.)- The SUNY Canton men's soccer team lost to the University of Maine at Machias 1-0 Saturday in Nashua, N.H.
The game was played at Rivier College and the two teams will meet there again on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Roos fell to 7-4 in the Sunrise Conference and 7-8 overall.

Wilson and Merrow lead Roos to 5-3 win over Drexel

(Philadelphia, Pa.)- Brad Wilson (Orleans, Ontario) scored two goals and Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) had 33 saves helping the men's ice hockey team beat Drexel University 5-3 Friday night in Philadelphia.
The Roos improved to 6-1 overall and will face the Dragons again Saturday night at 8 p.m.
Wilson also had an assist and Merrow made several huge stops late in the game to preserve the Roos win on Friday.

Hamilton holds off Knights, 3-1 in women's soccer

Potsdam, NY – Alex Rimmer scored a pair of goals five minutes apart midway through the second half to lift Hamilton College to a 3-1 Liberty League victory over the Clarkson University Women’s Soccer team Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights fell to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in conference games, while Hamilton improved to 8-1-3 overall and 4-1-1 in league contests. Clarkson will close out the conference schedule on Sunday when it hosts William Smith College at 1:00 pm.
