Walkin' for Willz 5K Walk/Run held in Potsdam Saturday

POTSDAM – The 2nd annual Walkin' for Willz 5K Walk/Run for Juvenile Diabetes will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and the walk starting at 10 a.m.
Last year over 400 people from all over St. Lawrence County participated and raised over $37,000.

Chicken barbecue held in Chipman Sept. 11

CHIPMAN – The 55th annual Chipman chicken barbecue will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. at the Scotch Presbyterian Church, 35 County Rt. 33. Cost is $8.50 adults (take-out or dining-in) $4 children, $5.50 one-half chicken only. A country kitchen bazaar will also be held.

Allen J. Murray, 90, Massena

A Mass of Resurrection with full military honors for Allen J. Murray, 90, of Massena, will be held on Monday, September 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Massena, with Rev. Michael Gaffney presiding. Friends and family may be received on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St. Massena. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Allen passed away on September 9, 2010 at his home under the loving care of his family and hospice.

I decided to run for the County Legislature because every year I have seen friends and family members of all ages forced to leave the North Country Because of a lack of jobs and ever increasing taxes.

To the Editor:
Although it makes for a nice “hometown” flavor to picture a young Amish girl tending her family’s table at the Potsdam Farmers’ Market (Front Page, Sept. 1-7), it would behoove the photographer to realize that taking a photo of an Amish person is against their belief.
They do not believe in having images of themselves or their property taken and reproduced.
Fortunately, they are much more tolerant of other’s ignorance then we are of their beliefs and values.

No kids in sidecars

I was shocked and had a “you’ve got to be kidding” moment when today at a stoplight in Canton I pulled up behind a motorcycle with a sidecar and saw a small child in the sidecar. If I had a cell phone, I would have called the police. Some people just shouldn’t have kids.

Crosswalk danger

People complain about the crosswalk near the Roxy in Potsdam all the time. A few weeks ago I was trying to cross and had carefully looked both ways and waited for a break in traffic. The car in the lane closest to me was kind enough to stop, so I proceeded cautiously. It’s a good thing I was being careful and paying attention, because, of all things, a police car came speeding through the other lane while I was in the middle of the crosswalk. It was broad daylight and the police car didn’t have its lights turned on.

Food, vendors, fall activities at Massena Chamber's Harvest Festival Saturday

MASSENA – The Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating its third annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 11, from noon to 5 p.m. on Main Street with a day full of scarecrow making, wagon rides, food and music.
Downtown from East Orvis to Andrews Street will be blocked off, but there will be other activities happening around the downtown area so make sure to check everything out.

CANTON – As the nation prepares to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, one local church is working to counter the recent rise in demonstrations of anti-Islamic feelings, from demands not to build an Islamic Center near Ground Zero to threats by a Florida preacher to publicly burn copies of the holy book of Islam, the Koran.
