Clarkson volleyball team faces significant challenges in 2010

POTSDAM – Last year could be summed up as a season of firsts for the Clarkson University Volleyball team.
The Golden Knights claimed their first Liberty League Championship, were selected for their first NCAA Tournament appearance, had their first-ever All-American picked, and had the best winning percentage in program history.

Mary Jane Beckstead Memorial Doubles Tennis Tourney to be held Sept. 11

MASSENA – The Mary Jane Beckstead Memorial Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 beginning at 8 a.m. (finishing in one day) at the Alcoa Field tennis courts. Events include men's open doubles, women's open doubles, and mixed doubles
The cost is $10 per player for one event, $5 for second event. Bring one unopened can of tennis balls per team.
Matches will be best of three sets, 12-point tie breaker.
Prizes will be awarded to first & second place teams for each event. T-shirt will be given to each tournament participant.

SLU volleyball team earns first win of season at Cortland Classic

CORTLAND -- The St. Lawrence University Saints volleyball team earned its first win of the season with a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-8) sweep of the Montclair State Red Hawks Friday afternoon at the Cortland Classic. The squad then fell to SUNY Fredonia, 3-0 (18-25, 8-25, and 24-26) in the nightcap.
"I thought we took care of business against Montclair and did a nice job of competing with different people on the court versus a very good Fredonia program," Coach Roiger said.

Two major fights break out in Potsdam; police seek help from public in identifying those involved

POTSDAM – Two major fights broke out overnight, and village police are asking the public for help in identifying those involved.
Numerous injuries were sustained in what was described to police at 11:39 p.m. Friday as a large fight at LaCasbah, 6 Elm St. Police said several people were involved and charges are pending.
Police have asked anyone with information about the identity of those involved to contact the department at 265-2121.

Potsdam Central's Class of '60 has large turn out for 50th class reunion

POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Central School Class of 1960 recently held its 50th class reunion.
The group says they had a good Friday night at the Birches Restaurant in Hannawa Falls.
The following morning they had a tour of the high school with Principal Joann Chambers, followed by a brunch at Eben’s Hearth.
That Saturday night, they had a buffet dinner at Tardelli’s Restaurant with special guest Marie Harrigan Anderson, who taught business courses, and Con Elliott, their famous sports announcer.

Veterans, new faces look to lift SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer to new heights

POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam head women’s soccer coach Tim Moody is excited to be back for his fifth season with the Bears.
The Bears open the season on the road Saturday, Sept.4, when they take on Hilbert College at 4 p.m., in the first round of the Alfred University Tournament. The team opens its home schedule against Wells College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Maxcy Hall Turf Field.
Last season Moody’s squad, which finished with an 8-9-1 record in 2009, played the best soccer he’s seen in his tenure at Potsdam and is looking to build on that success.

Local band Knatty Zeff releases CD on Sept. 7

They may seem to some like they belong at opposite ends of a spectrum, but on Tuesday, Sept. 7, two worlds are going to collide when hard rock meets literature.
Fast on the heels of the release of Marc Spicer's illustrated novel, Saviors Among Us: Situation Critical, local metal band Knatty Zeff is about to release an original CD single based on the work.
The end result is a special limited edition copy of the novel that comes complete with an exclusive copy of Knatty Zeff's CD single and a host of other goodies.

SLU men's soccer team blanks Roberts Wesleyan, 2-0

POTSDAM -- Sophomore Alex Laird used his height to advantage to score on a penalty kick 17 minutes into the second half, sending St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan on day one of the annual Lotto Invitational Tournament at Clarkson on Friday.

Golden Knights fall 2-0 in men's soccer season opener against Houghton

POTSDAM -- A pair of unlucky goals pushed the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team on edge for close to 70 minutes, as the Golden Knights fell 2-0 in the season-opener against Houghton College in the LOTTO Tournament Classic Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights, now 0-1-0 on the season, will face Roberts Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m. today. Houghton College, 2-2-0 overall, will play St. Lawrence University at 12:00 noon. In game two of the LOTTO Tournament, St. Lawrence shut downed Roberts Wesleyan, 2-0.
