Librarians, daycare providers, recreation department and nursing home activity directors from across St. Lawrence County gathered in Potsdam recently for a StoryWalk workshop conducted by its creators from the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, VT. On a StoryWalk, children and families read a book posted along a trail, promoting literacy and physical activity. Look for StoryWalk events in your community. The free workshop was sponsored by the Health Initiative's Creating Healthy Places St.
Phone survey seeks Potsdam residents’ opinion on dissolving village government

POTSDAM – SUNY Potsdam students are conducting a telephone survey of Potsdam residents to see how they feel about the possibility of disbanding the village government.
SUNY Potsdam spokeswoman and Potsdam Dissolution Committee member Alexandra Jacobs says the politics class project is just that, and not an official survey for the committee or the village.
The project is designed, she said, to give the politics students some experience with an actual local issue.

Crane school choral extravaganza April 5

POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music presents its spring Crane Choral Extravaganza 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam.
Highlights will include the Hosmer Singers performing "Mata del Anima Sola" and Bach's "Singet dem Herrn ein Neues Lied;" the Phoenix Club presenting "The Songster's Childhood," based on Estonian folk songs, and "El Cielo Canta Alegria," which has Argentine origins; and the Men's Ensemble performing "Sophomoric Philosophy" by Dvorak and the spiritual "Joshua Fit De Battle of Jerico."

SLCHA to offer splint seat workshop April 6, 13

CANTON – The St. Lawrence County Historical Association 3 East Main St., will offer a split seat workshop on Wednesdays, April 6 and 13 from 7 - 9 p.m. Instructor Carl Stickney has decades of experience replacing splint-woven seats.
Participants should bring a chair with the old seat removed and should be able to complete one chair seat during the two sessions.

Two Gouverneur youngsters injured in ATV accident in Macomb

MACOMB – Two youngsters were injured Saturday in an off-road ATV accident, according to state police.
Those involved were Nathan A. Shattuck, 5, Gouverneur, and Caden J. Stone, 6, Gouverneur, police said.
Police were called to the scene off County Route 7 at 12:44 p.m.

DeKalb Junction man jailed after allegedly attempting to flee police

DEKALB – A DeKalb Junction man was jailed Saturday night after allegedly attempting to flee police officers, according to state police.
Michael L. McRobbie, 25, was arrested at 10:25 p.m. on the Jeffers Road and charged with fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle third degree, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle third degree, speeding, criminal possession of a controlled substance seventh degree and unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.
He was jailed in lieu of $5,000 bail, police said.

Rep. Owens again asks for vote to suspend Congressional pay if government is shut down

Congressman Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, urging compromise in the ongoing budget cut debate on the House floor, has again asked Speaker John Boehner to immediately schedule a vote to suspend Congressional pay in the event of a government shutdown.
"We have that responsibility, that obligation, and we must lead by example," Owens told his colleagues.
Legislation aiming to do this has passed the Senate (S. 388), but was attached to a different bill in the House on Friday, not allowing for an up-or-down vote on the specific provision.

A newly launched website is featuring videos of Northern New York.
North Country Tube at http://www.nocotube.com is a YouTube-like site created for the North Country, according to John Sovie II of Norwood.
People from the North Country can create an account and then upload videos, photos, music, create a blog, make friends and more.
Also known as NoCoTube, the site includes videos of the band Tyrade, Hannawa Falls boating, snowmobiling, four-wheeling and more.

Drama about being a Black man in America runs April 5-9 at SUNY Potsdam

POTSDAM -- The Department of Theatre and Dance at SUNY Potsdam presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Topdog/Underdog" 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, April 5 to 9 in Black Box Theater in Satterlee Hall.
The play is about the realities of being a black man in America and stars Sean B. Johnson and Anthony Williams Jr., playing brothers Booth and Lincoln.
Forced to choose between dead-end jobs or hustling, the brothers confront one another and their future -- sometimes comically and sometimes violently.
