Vacation Bible school held at Ogdensburg Presbyterian Church Aug. 16-20

OGDENSBURG – Baobab Blast Vacation Bible School will be held at the First Presbyterian Church Monday through Friday, Aug. 16 to 20 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Kids age 4 through 6th grade can come be part of God's Great Get-Together and enjoy music, games, stories, science and crafts.
There is no cost to participate. Call the church office at 393-2510 to register or for more information.

Clayton raceboat regatta runs through Sunday

CLAYTON – The Antique Boat Museum will once again host the Antique Raceboat Regatta Friday, Aug. 13 through Sunday, Aug. 15 at the museum’s harbor in Clayton.
This year’s regatta will celebrate the tenth running of these rare outboards, classic hydroplanes, and antique inboards.

Potsdam village board should make concessions

The Potsdam mayor and village board must make some concessions for taxpayers if they hire two police officers. Every other public entity in the country is cutting back or laying off and we need to do the same. If they must hire, any new employees should have a less expensive benefit package. Village officials should also consider asking our current officers if they are willing to either do more with less or contribute to the health care costs in lieu of hiring two additional people.

Brasher Falls resident awarded nursing degree from Kaplan University

BRASHER FALLS – Kelly Durant-Adams of Brasher Falls has been awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Kaplan University, a leader in higher education innovation.
Durant-Adams's accomplishment was celebrated during a live graduation ceremony on Aug. 7 in Chicago. Harold Ford, Jr., a former U.S. Representative who President Bill Clinton once described as "the walking, living embodiment of where America ought to go in the 21st century" served as the commencement speaker.

'Livestock,' a three-day music festival in Lisbon continues until Sunday

LISBON – Plan to pitch your tents and take in a variety of local bands at the annual Livestock music festival, presented by Squaw Creek Cattle Co., tonight through Sunday, Aug. 13-15, 352 Keystone Rd.
Free camping, activities and limited concessions will be available during the three-day event.
Tickets are $3 Friday, $10 Saturday, and $5 Sunday; 17 and under are free, but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUNY Canton to offer new bachelor's degree in sports management

CANTON -- SUNY Canton has received state approval to offer a new bachelor's degree program in sports management, beginning this fall.
Several students who were anticipating the program's approval have already enrolled to begin courses this fall semester. The New York State Education Department and the State University of New York recently approved the business administration in sports management program, in the college's School of Business and Liberal Arts.

'Sun Oven' demonstrated at Potsdam farmer's market Aug. 21

POTSDAM – A workshop in conjunction with the Potsdam Farmers’ Market Saturday, Aug. 21, will demonstrate the Sun Oven, a cooker that uses no electricity, firewood, gas or fossil fuels to cook a meal or even bake some cookies.
Caron Collins, an assistant professor at The Crane School of Music and owner of a business promoting fair trade and ecological products, including the versatile Sun Oven, will lead the workshop at noon, near the Potsdam Farmer's Market, at the rear of the municipal parking lot next to Ives Park.

W. Potsdam fire department holds motorcycle poker run Aug. 15

WEST POTSDAM – The West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department will hold their annual motorcycle poker run Sunday, Aug. 15, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the bingo hall rain or shine.
The 120-mile run begins at 11 a.m. and returns to the bingo hall at 5 p.m.
There will be a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and other raffles. An outdoor barbecue will be held following the run beginning at 6 p.m.
The cost $15 per bike and $5 each additional rider; $10 dinner only; $5 per hand 50 percent payout for poker run winner.

OGDENSBURG – Funeral services for Jacqueline Goble, 48, of 223 Montgomery St., will be held on Monday, Aug. 16, at Frary Funeral Home at 10 a.m. with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating.
Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery in Black Lake.
Calling hours will be held on Aug. 16, Frary Funeral Home from 9 to 10 a.m.
Mrs. Goble passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at her home.
