Colton motorist jailed, charged with DWI after vehicle lands in Pierrepont ditch

PIERREPONT – A Colton man has been charged with drunk driving and jailed after he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and landed in a ditch.
Kevin R. Helmar, 53, of 28 Sturtevant Rd., Colton, refused to provide a breath sample and was ordered held in St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 bail following after being arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court, according to St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.

MASSENA – The Massena Artists Association has chosen Sandra Hildreth and Barry Lobdell to judge their 26th Annual Juried Art Exhibit. Both are professional artists whose work is well known and respected throughout the North Country.
The Massena Artists Association’s 26th Annual Juried Art Exhibit features over 100 works of art by dozens of local and regional artists.
It showcases work in a large variety of media, styles, and subject matter.

Computer chip maker Intel donates $1.4 million to Clarkson in past decade

POTSDAM -- During the past ten years, Clarkson University has received more than $1.4 million of direct and indirect funding from Intel Corporation.
The world's leading chip maker donated silicon wafer polishing equipment and provided the funding to support research in the area of chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) to Professors S.V. Babu, Egon Matijevic, and Dipankar Roy, and in nanoparticle detachment to Prof. Cetin Cetinkaya.
The money also supported many graduate and undergraduate researchers, and led to the hiring of 12 Clarkson Ph.D. graduates in recent years.

AAUW National Women and Girls Sports Day rescheduled for Feb. 9 in Potsdam

The St. Lawrence County branch of New York State American Association of University Women has rescheduled its celebration of National Women and Girls Sports Day for Feb. 9.
The winter storm this week had its effect on the local celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. But the event, sponsored locally by the St. Lawrence County Branch, is rescheduled for next Wednesday, Feb. 9 in area schools.

TAUNY is pleased to be one of several North Country organizations to recently receive funding from Ronald McDonald Charities of Northern New York. “We are grateful for the generous donation to our Evergreen Campaign for renovations to The TAUNY Center,” said The TAUNY Center Project Director Varick Chittenden. “Phase II of our project includes creation of an Education Gallery on the second floor of the Center. In that space, we visitors--especially children--will meet and learn from master traditional artists of all kinds, with workshops, demonstrations, concerts, and school classes.

CANTON -- Robert J. Ashley, president and C.E.O. of Triple ”A” Building Center, 25 Commerce Lane, was elected to the board of directors of hardware, lumber and building materials buying co-op Do it Best Corp. at their October meeting in Indianapolis.
In addition to his position on the Do it Best board, Ashley is first vice president of Northern New York Lumber Dealers Association, board member and treasurer of the St. Lawrence Health Alliance, and is on the board of Ogdensburg Lions Club.

Sustainable Living Project to continue planning for Local Living Festival at Feb. 9 meeting in Canton

CANTON, NY -- The Sustainable Living Project (SLP) meets Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Canton Fire Department Community Room, 77 Riverside Dr., to plan for the 2011 Local Living Festival.
The festival is scheduled for Sept. 24 and 25, and will feature many workshops, home tours, and educational events.
Wednesday’s gathering will last about an hour, or 90 minutes if participants join the break-out sessions after the meeting.
