State’s executive budget posted online

ALBANY -- As the state Senate and Assembly begin budget hearings, the Assembly has posted a Statistical and Narrative summary of the 2011-2012 Executive Budget, also known as the Yellow Book, online.
The comprehensive document provides an overview of the governor’s $132.9 billion spending plan as well as agency reviews of the plan, according to Assemblywoman Addie Russell.
It can be viewed online at http://assembly.state.ny.us/Reports/WAM/2011Yellow/.

No-tap bowling to benefit Ogdensburg rescue squad on Feb. 13

OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Bowl, 1121 Paterson St., is sponsoring a no-tap bowling tournament to benefit the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 13.
Team fee is $75, for a maximum of five team members, or $15 per bowler.

‘Out at the Movies’ returning to Potsdam tomorrow night

POTSDAM – Out at the Movies (the North Country’s LGBT Film Festival) is returning in 2011, starting with a special Valentine’s Day presentation of the film “The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister,” on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. in Wakefield Recital Hall, SUNY Potsdam. Admission is free.
There will be a reception with cookies and coffee after the film.
The film is a BBC drama based on the life of the 19th Century woman who has been called “Britain’s first modern lesbian.”

John William Sherwin, age 85, of Moira, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at his home where he was in the care of his family and Hospice of the North Country in Malone.

Sandra E. Marrama, age 62, of Brushton, and formerly of Burlington, MA died on Friday, February 11, 2011.
Sandra was born in Sommerville, MA on January 15, 1949 the daughter of the late John and Rita Kenny McGinness. She graduated from Burlington High School. In 1968 she was united in marriage to Richard J. Marrama. Sandra worked for Belafram Electronics Company as an assembler of electronics. She also worked for the family business, Forring Contracting as an accountant.
In her free time, Sandra enjoyed knitting a variety of items and donating to different charities.
Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation recently held a volunteer training clinic on wheelchair transportation. The clinic, taught by Kim Weir, employee health nurse, covered proper wheelchair techniques and addressed many transportation questions and challenges to over ten attendees. SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball downed by Cortland

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team shot 29.1 percent on Friday night, falling against Cortland 70-48 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference showdown at Maxcy Hall’s Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
The Bears (3-18 overall, 2-12 SUNYAC) remained close for most of the first half until Cortland knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 36 seconds of the period to take a 34-17 into the locker room.

Potsdam Bears win basketball overtime thriller

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men’s basketball team executed at key moments on Friday night, gutting out a 62-60 overtime victory over SUNY Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference contest at Maxcy Hall’s Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
Sophomore Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit the go-ahead free throw in the extra period and sophomore Josh Lambert (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added one more to give the Bears (7-14 overall, 6-8 SUNYAC) a gritty win in front of a large crowd on the school’s eighth annual Bear Pride Night.

Free training offered in Canton for auto mechanics, office work, nursing, construction, security guards

CANTON -- Job Corps is offering free career training for 16 to 24 year olds in auto mechanics, auto body repair, medical and business office, C.N.A., L.P.N, construction, culinary arts, security guard and more. They will be orienting and interviewing prospective students Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m. at the St. Lawrence One Stop Career Center, 80 State Highway 310, Suite 8, in Canton.
The program includes up to two years education and training, campus housing, meals and many other services. There is no cost to eligible students.

Giant Potsdam ice sculptures gone; skills not passed down

POTSDAM – Construction of giant snow sculptures, a beloved Potsdam tradition, appears to be a thing of the past thanks to unpredictable winters and lack of student interest at the two colleges that once competed to build the best.
For years, everything from full-size cars, to two-story dinosaurs, to World War II tributes was constructed from ice and snow. Often, they were lit for nighttime viewing
throughout the village.
