Potsdam drops two at Russell Sage volleyball tri-match; Bears host conference meet next week

POTSDAM, N.Y. (10/16/2010)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team suffered consecutive setbacks Saturday afternoon at the Russell Sage Tri-Match in Albany, N.Y.
The Bears were defeated by William Paterson (N.J.) 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 15-9) in their opening match.
Potsdam (6-19) lost its second match of the day against Skidmore, which defeated the Bears in three sets last weekend, 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-14).

POTSDAM, N.Y. (10/16/2010)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team suffered its fourth straight one-goal loss Saturday, falling 3-2 at Buffalo State in double overtime in State University of New York Athletic Conference action.
After tying the game with just over 13 minutes left in regulation, the Bengals (3-11
overall, 1-6 SUNYAC) struck again in the 109th minute, sending the Bears to another gut-wrenching defeat in the closing minutes.

Clarkson women rally for first ever win in hockey at St. Lawrence

Its first triumph ever at Appleton Arena in Canton could not have come at a better time for the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team as the Golden Knights picked up their initial win of the season with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over archrival St. Lawrence University in non-league play on Saturday afternoon.

Saints 2-1 in volleyball at Steven's Institute Invitational

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team closed out the Steven's Institute of Technology Quad Saturday, finishing 2-1 on the weekend.
The Saints move to 15-7 on the season.
"Though had an efficient offense today against John Jay college, we continue to make far too many service errors," Coach Shelly Roiger said. "Until we can discipline ourselves in that area of play we will continue to hand points away, which we cannot afford to do."
In the first game of the day, the Saints swept Mount St. Vincent, 25-20, 25-13, 25-8.

Rogers sparks Saints women to 2-1 win at Clarkson in soccer

Junior Elena Rogers scored one goal and set up the game winner as St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team edged North Country rival 2-1 in a Liberty League women's soccer game in Potsdam on Saturday.
Rogers helped the Saints come from behind to improve to 9-6 overall on the season and 2-3 in league play.
Clarkson opened the scoring at the 24:13 mark of the first half when an attempted clear by the Saints was intercepted by Alex Petitti, who put a long shot to the near post for the game's first goal.

Roos men's ice hockey rips Mercyhurst 6-1 for fourth straight win; Liggio scores second hat trick

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team remained unbeaten as they ripped Mercyhurst College 6-1 Friday night at the Canton Pavilion.
Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) scored his second hat trick in as many games helping the Roos improve to 3-0 in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League and 4-0 overall. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Pavilion.

National Federation of Independent Business-New York endorsing Ritchie for State Senate

The National Federation of Independent Business-New York, representing thousands of small businesses across Central and Northern New York, has endorsed Patty Ritchie for State Senate, saying she will be a “strong, consistent and unwavering advocate” for jobs and small business owners.
Ritchie is challenging Democratic incumbent Darrel Aubertine for the 48th state Senate district seat.
The NFIB endorsement is the fourth Ritchie has received from a leading pro-jobs group.

Skating extended extra hour after school for kids in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Kids will have an extra hour after school on weekday afternoons to skate at Pine Street Arena for the next three weeks.
The usual schedule has open skating from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. But the Potsdam High School Hockey Team doesn't start practicing there on weekdays until Nov. 8, so the Recreation Department has extended open skating hours until 3:45 on weekdays through Friday, Nov. 5.
Then starting on the 8th, open skating goes back to 1:45 to 2:45, Monday through Friday.

Special worship service in recognition of Fire Prevention Month tomorrow in Madrid

MADRID – A special worship service for community fire and rescue workers in recognition of Fire Prevention Month will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 at the United Church of Madrid.
Worship will conclude with a time of food and fellowship. The church is on the corner of St. Rt. 345 and Cross Street and is handicapped accessible.
