Two killed in Route 11 collision near Gouverneur

ROSSIE – Two people were killed Saturday afternoon in a two-car accident on NYS Hwy. 11 near the Gouverneur town line.
State police say their preliminary investigation indicates a 2008 Dodge pick-up truck operated by Shawn M. Trimm, 32, of Gouverneur, was northbound when it collided shortly before 3:21 p.m. with a southbound 1998 Plymouth van operated by Shirley A. Hays, 69, of Gouverneur.

State police participating in AAA’s “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” safety campaign

The commander of State Police Troop B says they are once again participating in the American Automobile Association’s annual “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” safety campaign by putting bumper stickers that say that on their patrol vehicles.
Troop B Commander Major Richard Smith says the AAA program publicizes the effort to safeguard school children during the “back to school” period when drivers get reaccustomed to preparing to stop for stopped school buses and children walking to school.

Owens to stop in Massena, Canton on Monday

Congressman Bill Owens will make two stops in St. Lawrence County Monday.
Owens will first meet with New York State Agriculture Commissioner Pat Hooker at Moses State Park in Massena from 11 a.m. to noon to observe August as Forest Pest Awareness Month.
In the afternoon, he will tour the Corning plant in Canton. The Corning plant recently rehired most of its laid-off hourly employees and announced plans to hire 20 more.

Red Knights Raise $1,300 for Cerebral Palsy

CANTON -- Red Knights Motorcycle Chapter NY 35 has donated $1,300 to the Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country.
The money was raised at the annual Charity Ride for the Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country on July 10.

Glenn Miller Orchestra in Lake Placid on Aug. 25

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid Center for the Arts welcomes back the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, one of the longest running big bands in the world Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 8 p.m.
Trombonist Larry O'Brien is the orchestra's present musical director.
Tickets are $22 and can be purchased at the LPCA Box Office or by calling 518-523-2512.
The 19-member band continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements that keep exciting fans who have not heard them played for a while.

Manfred presiding. Friends and family may be received Sunday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home.
Joseph P. Szaybel passed away Friday evening, August 20, 2010 at the St. Regis Nursing Home where he had been a resident since November, 2009.

Ms. Charlotte B. Thompson, 97, a resident of the Highland Nursing Home, passed away on Friday evening, August 20, 2010 at the nursing home.
She was born April 26, 1913 in Massena, the daughter of Jonas and Mary Benedict Thompson. She attended schools in Norfolk. She worked at one time at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, CA and for General Electric in Syracuse.
She is survived by a daughter, Eileen Newman and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased a sister, Sadie Perkins, three brothers, Roy C., Robert Wallace, and Percy Thompson.
