Massena Masons planning covered dish supper, meeting on Oct. 26

MASSENA -- Massena Lodge No. 513 Free and Accepted Masons will hold their regular stated communication at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26 in the Masonic Temple at 90-1/2 Main Street.
A meeting will follow a covered dish dinner at 6:30. The District Deputy Grand Master will be bringing the Grand Master’s Message.
All members in good standing are expected, and visiting brethren are fraternally invited to attend.

Cardio & sculpt classes begin Oct. 26 in Canton

CANTON -- Dr. Lisa Francey Towle will be starting a new six-week session of an Ultimate Cardio and Sculpt class from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26 at St. Lawrence University.
The focus is muscular endurance and muscular toning, but a moderate to hard cardio workout can be expected. It is $35 for six classes or $6 per class.

Masons from First and Second St. Lawrence Districts recently came together for their annual apple sale. Dozens of the Brothers and other volunteers converged at Waddington Arena to help package varieties and sizes for orders taken in prior weeks. Hundreds of bushels were delivered by the crew. The sale was conducted by St. Lawrence Masonic Charities, and the proceeds benefit local charitable organizations in need.
St. Lawrence County Branch AAUW presenting SUNY Potsdam professor with AAUW Research Award

POTSDAM – The St. Lawrence County Branch, AAUW, will present its fifth annual AAUW Research Award to Dr. Shiho Imai, Assistant Professor of History at SUNY Potsdam at its annual fall membership meeting Wednesday, Oct. 27 in the United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 28 Main St.
There will be a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. with the program by Imai to follow. She will discuss her research into her book, “Creating the Nisei Market: Japanese American Consumer Culture.” The meeting is open to the public, who are encouraged to attend.

The staff and administration at Seaway Career & Technical Education Center in Norwood are please to announce the selection of Jessyca Dimick as the Potsdam Rotary Club/Seaway Career & Technical Education Center Student of the Month for September 2010.
Jessyca, who is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program, is also a student at St. Lawrence Central. She is the daughter of Nancy Dimick.

Potsdam's Misty Hollow again seeking used toys to cheer up those in need this holiday season

POTSDAM – Once again this year, Bob Porter of Misty Hollow, 22 Market St., is asking for toys that people don’t want anymore, so he can donate them to agencies and organizations that will put them into the hands of people who will apppreciate them this coming holiday season.
Last year, Porter’s effort brought in nearly 5,000 gently used toys and stuffed animals that went to nursing homes, Neighborhood Centers, day cares, Renewal House, Rose Hill, to police and emergency medical personnel, and into hospital emergency rooms.

Crane faculty recital to feature voice, viola, piano Oct. 26 in Potsdam

POTSDAM -- Visiting instructor Esme Allen-Creighton will perform a recital along with guest faculty musicians at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 in Hosmer Concert Hall.
Mezzo-soprano Lorraine Yaros Sullivan and pianist François Germain will join Allen-Creighton for a performance of three songs for medium voice, viola and piano by Frank Bridge, including "Far From Each Other," "Where is it That our Soul Doth Go?" and "Music when Soft Voices Die."F

Strengthening and toning exercise class begins Oct. 26 in Canton

CANTON -- A new session of Strengthening & Toning Exercise Class runs Tuesday, Oct. 26 through Thursday, Dec. 16, Tuesday and Thursday at 8 a.m. in the St. Lawrence University fitness center multi-purpose room.
It is taught by certified fitness instructor Teresa Stone.
The weight-bearing exercises are designed to strengthen muscles, create definition and tone, improve bone density and help balance and stability by focusing on core muscles. While the class is not geared to be a cardiovascular workout, participants will elevate heart rate and increase circulation.

House under renovation suffers minor damage from Sunday fire in West Potsdam

WEST POTSDAM – Minor damage was reported after a fire broke out at a house under renovation Sunday, according to St. Lawrence County fire investigators.
The West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department responded at 10:23 a.m. to a house owned by William Kayea at 2954 County Route 14. There were no occupants in the building, officials said.
Mutual aid was provided by the Waddington, Madrid, Morley and Norwood fire departments. The Madrid Rescue Squad and National Grid also responded.
