The Potsdam Central High School boys varsity basketball team kicked off their 2010-2011 season by winning the Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Tournament in Glens Falls Dec. 3 and 4. They defeated Ausable Valley 72-42 and South Glens Fall in the championship game 83-51. Roos fall to Albany College of Pharmacy in men's basketball 84-75

(Potsdam, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s basketball team ended their first semester falling to Albany College of Pharmacy 84-75 Sunday afternoon in Potsdam.
The Roos are now 1-5 overall and are off until Jan. 7 when they play at Johnson State College.
The first four minutes of Sunday’s game saw the lead go back and forth as the lead changed hands five times.

SUNY Canton women lose to Albany College of Pharmacy in basketball, 57-43

(Potsdam, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women’s basketball team closed out their first semester with a 57-43 loss to Albany College of Pharmacy Sunday afternoon in Potsdam.
The Roos dropped to 1-7 overall and are off until Jan. 7 when they travel to Johnson State College.

A funeral service for 86-year old Mr. Arthur Louis Roy will be held at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam, on Monday, December 6, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. with Msgr. Robert Aucoin officiating. Mr. Roy died December 5, 2010 at Massena Memorial Hospital. He was a resident of Massena, and formerly from Niagara Falls.
Emmaline L. Schiavone, 86, Norwood

Funeral services for 86 year Emmaline L. Schiavone, of 25 Ridge Street, Norwood, will be held Tuesday at 12 noon at St. Andrew’s Church in Norwood with Rev. Msgr. Harry Snow, pastor, presiding. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Norwood.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood. Mrs. Schiavone passed away late Saturday night, Dec. 4 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Roos capture Blizzard at Buffalo tournament blanking Buffalo 3-0

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team captured the Blizzard at Buffalo Tournament beating the host and 18th-ranked University of Buffalo 3-0 Saturday night at the Northtown Center at Amherst in Amherst, N.Y.
Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) turned aside all 21 shots he faced to post his first shutout of the season helping the Roos improve to 17-3. SUNY Canton, ranked 21st in the latest ACHA Division I rankings, wrapped up their first semester having won nine of their last 10 games.

Mountain bikers, ADK members, students and residents donate 400 hours to improve Stone Valley trails in Colton

COLTON -- Members of the St. Lawrence Mountain Bike Association and Adirondack Mountain Club, local residents, and students and faculty from the four local universities made significant improvements recently to trails at the Stone Valley Recreation Area.
In one weekend last month, almost 400 man hours were volunteered to help improve the trail system. With an average turnout of 30 volunteers per day, many projects were completed.

Women’s retreat to focus on ‘intentional living’ in Canton

CANTON -- Linda Potter will lead “A Year Of Intentional Living” from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13. Rather than making resolutions that don’t work, retreat participants will set intentions for the new year. Women will use journaling exercises, group discussion and collages to visualize how their year can unfold around their intention in meaningful ways. Norwood Library to hold annual Christmas party Dec. 8

NORWOOD – Norwood Library’s annual Christmas party will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m., beginning with stories around the Christmas tree.
The prizes for the Children’s Holiday Reading Contest and the Fill-a-Mug contest will be awarded.
The winners of the Friends of the Norwood Library raffle will be announced. There will be trivia with prizes, and refreshments will be served.
All books read for the Children’s Holiday Reading Contest must be returned by 9 p.m., Dec. 7. These books must have been borrowed from the Norwood Library to be counted.
