Nicholville UMC to hold memorial tree lighting service Sunday

NICHOLVILLE – The Nicholville United Methodist Church will hold its annual memorial tree lighting service on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m.
Hot spiced cider and donuts will be served immediately following.
The church is accepting donations of $1 per bulb in memory of a loved one.

Names will be published at a later date in local newspapers.
They are also accepting mittens, hats and scarves for the mitten tree.

Sculpting class offered in Ogdensburg at Remington's Kids' Place Nov. 27

OGDENSBURG – Sculpting with Lauren Gilmour will be offered Saturday, Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Kid's Place, part of the Frederic Remington Art Museum educational center.
Learn how to create a sculpture in clay and preserve it in a plaster of paris casting method, a technique similar to Remington's.
The cost is $18 members/$20 non-members.

Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department selling Christmas trees

PIERREPONT -- The Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department will be selling seven- to eight-foot Balsam and Scotch Pine Christmas Trees Dec. 4 – 19 or until all are sold.
Trees will be sold each day at the McIntosh home in Pierrepont Center and at the Price Chopper s in Canton from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. They can also be ordered by contacting any Pierrepont fireman.
Proceeds will benefit the Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department.

Crane professor and jazz students to perform with Wynton Marsalis Dec. 10 in New York City

POTSDAM -- Crane School of Music Professor Bret Zvacek and five Jazz Studies program students will perform with jazz legend Wynton Marsalis Dec. 10 in New York City.
Marsalis is to receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree presented by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher at the event.
SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music nominated Marsalis for the honorary degree through SUNY to recognize his artistry and charitable work on behalf of music education.

Carl E. Rivers Sr., 75, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at home under the care of his family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Calling hours will be Monday, November 29th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Lee VonWald, pastor Ford Reynolds, and pastor Reggie Curtis officiating and burial with military rites in Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville.
Carl was born June 4, 1935 in Canton, the son of Allen and Blanch “Sally” Charbonneau Rivers.

Morristown woman, acting as ‘cancer detective,’ discusses St. Lawrence County cancer causes in website podcast

MORRISTOWN – A Morristown woman described as a “cancer detective” is speaking out in a website podcast on what she says is a “pollution and cancer epidemic” in the St. Lawrence River Valley.
Michelle Reed is featured in an interview with Donald L. Hassig, Director of “Cancer Action NY” at http://www.radio4all.net/index.php/program/47317
According to a prepared statement from Hassig, Reed was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and has thought a lot about the question, "What caused me to get cancer?"

Hay rides, Santa, Rudolph Frosty and more to appear Nov. 26 at Canton’s Holiday of Lights

CANTON – Thousands of tiny twinkling white lights will mark the way as Santa Claus rolls down Main Street escorted by a Canton Police cruiser during Canton’s annual Holiday of Lights. This year’s event will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 26, on the village green.
Brad Mintener, event organizer, says the white lights have special meaning in Canton.
“We started the tradition of decorating downtown with little white lights, and now about 20 communities in the North Country do it,” he said.
