POTSDAM – "What is Physics? A Personal Perspective" will be discussed by Virginia Tech Physics Professor Royce K.P. Zia at the next Science Café at La Casbah, 6 Elm St., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 7:15 p.m.

Unlike "What is 2+3?" there is no easy answer to the question "What is Physics?"

STOCKHOLM – A turkey supper will be held at the West Stockholm United Methodist Church at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. Takeouts will be available at 4 p.m.

The menu includes turkey with dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, peas, squash, homemade rolls, pumpkin and apple pies, and beverages.

State Senator Joe Griffo says that he and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb have introduced legislation that would defer the collection of the increased sales tax on cigarettes until the state begins to collect the cigarette tax on tobacco sold on Native American reservations to non-tribe members.

Griffo said, “It’s unfair and until the administration moves forward on a uniform collection of the tax and increase should be deferred if not scrapped altogether.”

CANTON – “When the emerald ash borer gets here, it will cause big problems in a hurry,” says Patrick Whalen, Supervising Forester for DEC Region 6, Potsdam Sub-Office, and an upcoming meeting will present information about the bug.

“We need to prepare for it, because it’s spreading in our direction,” Whalen says.

To that end, a meeting to explain the spread of the forest pest and what we can do about it is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 in Brown Hall’s Bloomer, Gouverneur, Massena and Ogdensburg areas.

POTSDAM – The 1844 House, in partnership with North Country Grown Cooperative, will present a harvest dinner in celebration of local food on Wednesday, Oct. 13, with cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.

Musical guest Jazz band Yellow Moon will supply the evening’s entertainment.

Chef Brian Walker will prepare a 6-course dinner showcasing the bounty of fresh produce, meats and cheeses produced right here in St. Lawrence County by our local farmers.

The cost is $75 per person inclusive of tax & gratuity ($37.50 per guest is a tax deductable donation).
