Mr. Larry S. Gardner, 64, of 8 North Main Street, passed away Friday evening at his home, after a short illness.
Larry was born June 1, 1946 in Massena, the son of the late Sumner and Hazel Brock Gardner. He graduated from Massena High School and attended one year of college before being drafted in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after proudly serving.

POTSDAM – Marina A. Llorente, co-chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at St. Lawrence University, Canton, will speak at the next installment of the 2010-11 SUNY Potsdam Women's and Gender Studies Anne R. Malone Lecture Series.
Her talk, entitled "Memory Against Forgetting: Spanish Civil War and Franco's Dictatorship in Contemporary Poetry," will be offered at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2 in the eighth floor boardroom in Raymond Hall on the SUNY Potsdam campus.
This event is free, and the public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Norfolk UMC to hold cabbage roll sale Nov. 2

NORFOLK – A cabbage roll sale will be held at the Norfolk United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Customers are asked to bring their own containers. The price is $2.50 each.
RADA products and dishcloths will also be available for purchase.

Democrat-controlled county legislature could be dominated by Republicans following Tuesday elections

The St. Lawrence County Legislature, now dominated by Democrats, could become controlled by the GOP following Tuesday’s election.
Now made up of 10 Democrats and five Republicans, the legislature is guaranteed to lose two Democrats, which would close the gap to 8-7 in favor of the Democrats.

Brian McGrath, the 122nd Assembly District Democrat candidate, has created a new web site, www.stopthebraindrain.com, chronicling the stories of young people forced to leave the North Country to find work, and seeking input on how to keep our best and brightest.
"Every North Country family knows someone who has been forced to leave our area to find work,” McGrath said.

Robin Marie Stephenson, 47, Massena

Ms. Robin Marie Stephenson, 47, of 38 Elm Street, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, October 27, 2010 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, New Hampshire, after a courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis.
Robin was born July 27, 1963 in Potsdam, the daughter of the Patrick Robert and Sandra Lee LaMay Stephenson. She graduated from Massena Central School in 1981 and received her B.A. degree from Tampa University in 1985.
Phyllis W. Baker, 74, Colton

Funeral services for 74-year-old Phyllis W. Baker, 72 Sunset View Lane, Colton, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton with Rev. Lee Sweeney presiding. Burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Colton. Friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Sunday from 1 - 4 p.m. Mrs. Baker passed away early Friday morning at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Brockport, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team rallied from an early deficit to open the 2010-11 campaign with a convincing 5-2 road victory over SUNY Brockport (0-2, 0-1 SUNYAC). Senior forward Colin MacLennan(Whitby, Ontario/Ajax Attack) scored three goals and assisted on a fourth to lead the Bears past the Golden Eagles. Senior captain Fraser Smith (Fonthill, Ontario/Oakville Blades) and freshman forward Brandon Couto (Bowmanville, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) also scored for Potsdam.

Knights five-match winning streak in volleyball halted by Tuft's Jumbos

Waltham, MA – A recent streak of dominance by the Clarkson University Volleyball team came to an end Friday night, as the Golden Knights lost to Tufts University in four sets, 25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, at the Judges Classic held at Brandeis.
The Golden Knights fell to 23-7 overall on the season, and have two more tough matches on Saturday afternoon when they face UMass-Boston and Brandeis.
