Assembly candidate Blankenbush hosting town hall meeting in Gouverneur

GOUVERNEUR -- Assembly candidate Ken Blankenbush of Black River will be hosting a town hall meeting 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 at Mullins Family Restaurant, 1162 U.S. Rt. 11.
Blankenbush invites residents to come with ideas and opinions regarding taxes, reducing government waste, creating and attracting jobs, helping small businesses and family farms, and reforming Albany.

Heating assistance applications taken starting Nov. 1

The St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services says it will begin accepting applications Nov. 1 for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
The program is aimed at assisting lower-income people and families with heating costs for winter.
The income guidelines for the 2010-2011 program are as follows:
• In a household of one person, the maximum monthly income for eligibility is $2,129
• Household of two, $2,784
• Household of three, $3,439
• Household of four, $4,094
• Household of 5, $4,749
• Household of six, $5,404

Clarkson opens ECAC hockey action, hosting Union and Rensselaer

After a difficult season-opening stretch of non-conference games, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team begins ECAC Hockey play this weekend, hosting Union and Rensselaer at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights face off against the Dutchwomen on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and battle the Engineers on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Saints finish women's soccer with 11 wins after 3-1 win at Potsdam

Sophomore Stephanie Sayward scored one goal and set up another as St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team finished its season with an 11-7 record after a 3-1 win at Potsdam State Wednesday afternoon.
SLU outshot Potsdam 15-5 and had nine corner kicks to one for the Bears, who finished their year at 10-10.The Saints recorded their most wins in a season since 2002

Knights end season with loss at Oswego State in women's soccer

Potsdam, NY - A muddy track slowed the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team down after a season on turf, as the Golden Knights completed the campaign with a 6-0 loss to Oswego State Wednesday afternoon.
Clarkson finished the season with a 4-13 record overall, while Oswego State finished up at 7-10-1.

Clarkson men's soccer drops 1-0 decision at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY - A single score separated the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and regional-power Plattsburgh State for the first time since the 2002 season, but the Golden Knights losing streak against the Cardinals continued as the Green and Gold fell 1-0 Wednesday night.
The Golden Knights, winless in their last six contests, fell to 6-7-2 overall, and will close out the regular season on Saturday against St. Lawrence University. Plattsburgh improved to 13-4-1 overall.

Potsdam women's soccer comes up short against SLU on Senior Day but may qualify for postseason berth

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team concluded its 2010 season Wednesday with a 3-1 loss against St. Lawrence in a non-conference showdown at Maxcy Hall Turf Field.
By finishing with a 10-10 record, the Bears have an outside chance at qualifying for the ECAC Tournament. The team will wait for the announcement of the tournament field, which will come some time in the next two weeks.

Mary Woods, 94, Ogdensburg

Funeral services for Mary Woods, age 94, of Ogdensburg, will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Notre Dame Church at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Mrs. Woods passed away on October 25, 2010 at Highland Nursing Home, Massena.
Mrs. Woods is survived by two brothers, Joseph Sorel of Ogdensburg and Frank Sharpe of Mount Hope, Canada; and a special niece, Linda Ferris and her husband David of Ogdensburg.

Mr. David M. Roy, age 58, of Potsdam, passed away suddenly on October 26, 2010 at the Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. There will be no calling hours or funeral service.
