Low-income residents in rural St. Lawrence County may be eligible for free satellite internet equipment

NORWOOD – Lower income residents in St. Lawrence County may be eligible for free broadband satellite equipment and reduced monthly fees.
HughesNet high-speed satellite Internet service, represented locally by K&B Electronics, says 60,000 homes within a 60-mile of Norwood are eligible for benefits through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The HughesNet service, selected by the federal government to participate in the program, can offer eligible households Internet service with equipment or standard installation at no cost, and a reduced monthly fee.

Massena students working with world’s largest Christmas project

MASSENA -- The St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau is partnering with students at Massena Alternative Education in Operation Christmas Child, which bills itself as the world's largest Christmas project.
The operation has community members fill shoe boxes with gifts for children in more than 100 countries.
OCC says it has delivered boxes filled with school supplies, hygiene products and small toys to 77 million children.

Jamboree-benefit for Bill Frary in Winthrop Nov. 7

WINTHROP – A jamboree-benefit for cancer patient Bill Frary will be held at the Winthrop American Legion, Sunday, Nov. 7 beginning at 1 p.m.
The $3 cover charge includes food.
There will be chances on a lottery tree, 50-50 and many raffles. Also many bands will perform.

Harvest dinner at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ogdensburg on Sunday

OGDENSBURG – A harvest dinner will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church’s parish hall, Knox St., Sunday, Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The menu includes turkey and all the trimmings.
The cost is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for children 6-12, free for children under 6 (eat-in only).

Knights close out Vassar in volleyball at Liberty League Tournament

Canton, NY - An early spot on the schedule did little to deter the Clarkson University Volleyball team on Saturday morning, as the Golden Knights came storming out of the gate with a three-set sweep over Vassar College, 25-13, 25-22, 25-21, to move to 2-1 at the Liberty League Tournament Championships held at Burkman Gymnasium on the campus of St. Lawrence University.
The Golden Knights, who are now 26-9 overall, have just one match left in the championships, against second-seeded Skidmore at 3:00 pm. Vassar fell to 17-15 on the year.

Roos women's basketball starts season at Roberts Wesleyan; several area women are stand-outs on team

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's basketball team will start their 2010-11 season this afternoon at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester.
The Roos and the Raiders tip-off at 3:30.
SUNY Canton and seventh-year head coach Bruce Tallon have nine returning players including senior forward Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y.), the Sunrise Conference Player of the Year and an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in 2009-10.

Roos men's basketball kicks off season at Roberts Wesleyan

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's basketball team will kick off their 2010-11 campaign with a road game at Roberts Wesleyan College today.
The Roos will tip-off against the Raiders at 5:30.
SUNY Canton returns three players from last year's team including senior guards Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.) and Jajuan Williams (Richlands, N.C.) and junior forward Jeff Grenier (Whitehall, N.Y.).
Third-year head coach Keith Sullivan also welcomes back senior forward Silvon John (Bronx, N.Y.) who sat out last year after making the all-conference team the year before.

SUNY Canton's Fedor powers men's ice hockey to third straight win

(Binghamton, N.Y.)- Adam Fedor (Orleans, Ontario) pumped in three goals and assisted on one other leading the SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team to a 7-1 win over Binghamton University Friday night in Binghamton.
The Roos won their third straight game improving to 11-2 overall.
Fedor recorded his second hat trick of the season and now has a team-leading 14 goals and 22 points.

Roy Murray Akins, 62, formerly of Ogdensburg

Roy Murray Akins, of Blue Ridge, Va., formerly from Ogdensburg, born to Charles and Vivian on July 19, 1948, passed away peacefully October 25, 2010.
He retired from the Roanoke Water Authority on April 1, 2009.
