Louisville woman inducted into Potsdam Rotary Club

POTSDAM—Cortney Siddon of Louisville was inducted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Potsdam at its Wednesday, July 13, meeting.
Siddon is business development representative for Kelly Services in Potsdam.

Ogdensburg group gets smoking banned at Boys and Girls Club grounds

OGDENSBURG – The Ogdensburg Supporting Peers Options to Resist Tobacco (SPORT) Team recently successfully petitioned the Board of Directors at the Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club to make the Club and all of the recreational fields on the grounds tobacco free.

The heat is on...could break records today

Today is shaping up to be the hottest day so far this summer in the North Country as temperatures climb to 90 or higher, but at least there will be a breeze, and it will be turning a little cooler tomorrow and cooler yet by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service forecast..
Southwest winds will run at 15 to 22 miles an hour with some higher gusts as the thermometer will read in the low 90s this afternoon.
There is a slight chance of showers today, mainly in the afternoon and evening.
Tonight, skies will be partly cloudy with lows down to about 67.

Gouverneur Summer Concert Series at Riverview Park features classic rock Sunday, much more this summer

GOUVERNEUR – The fifth annual Summer Concert Series at Riverview Park pavilion continues Sunday, July 24 with The Essotiericks, an eclectic 50's, 60's, 70's folk, rock and pop band.
All concerts are held on Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m., rain or shine. They are free to the public, but donations are welcome.
Future concerts in the series include:
• July 31: Gouverneur Idol - A chance to see some of Gouverneur’s finest singers giving their best for the crowd. Everyone will have a good time watching our talented neighbors perform.

Lawnmower races in Norfolk Sunday

NORFOLK – The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department’s lawnmower races are set for Sunday, July 24, with another race scheduled Aug. 28.
The races will be held at Fire Station 3 on St. Rt. 420.
And everyone’s invited to a chicken barbecue starting at noon.

Invasive species workshop July 23 in Canton

CANTON – The St. Lawrence Land Trust is hosting a workshop to educate landowners and community members on how to identify and control the invasive pale swallow-wort Saturday, July 23 at 2 p.m.
Pale swallow-wort is becoming increasingly prevalent in the North Country and poses a threat to native plant species and the birds and insects that depend on them for survival.
Paul Hetzler from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County will be leading the workshop. It will be held at 605 Miner St.

Jackson M. Newton display set for Colton Museum at Colton Country Day July 23

COLTON – The Colton Historical Society is assembling a display at the Colton Museum concerning the gifts of Jackson M. Newton, South Colton resident, Colton High School graduate and lifetime member of the US Air Force.
The society annually opens the museum to visitors on Colton Country Day -- July 23 this year -- for the current display, which this year will pin-point certain aspects of Newton's collection, as well as the permanent historical records.

Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department acquires $175,000 heavy rescue truck

NORFOLK – Rescue 2, an E-ONE custom seven-person cab heavy rescue truck, is now part of the equipment lineup at the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department.
People will be able to see the vehicle at the third annual Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department lawnmower races and barbecue at Norfolk Fire Station 3 on State Rt. 420 Sunday starting at noon.
The Norfolk Fire District recently purchased the truck from the fire department in Southampton, Pa.
The price was $175,000 which includes about $40,000 of new equipment.
