Owens meets with Deputy Secretary of Labor to ease burden on upstate farmers

Congressman Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, recently met with upstate fruit and vegetable growers and Deputy Secretary of Labor Seth Harris in an ongoing effort to ease the process that helps supply local farmers with seasonal workers.
The two-hour meeting, organized by Rep. Louise Slaughter (NY-28), included several other members of Congress as well as the Deputy Secretary of Labor, top level Department of Labor staff, local growers and advocacy organizations.

St. Lawrence professor awarded grant to study community satisfaction in Adirondacks

CANTON - A St. Lawrence University professor will use a $74,639 grant from the Northeastern States Research Cooperative to study factors contributing to community satisfaction in the Adirondack Park.
Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Erik A. Backlund has been awarded the grant for the project, titled "Community Well-Being, Satisfaction and Attachment in the Adirondacks."

Six Foot Midget to perform in Massena July 28

MASSENA – The local rock and roll band Six Foot Midget will perform Thursday, July 28 from 6-8 p.m. as the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce continues its 2011 Concerts in the Park.
All concerts are held at the Springs Park Amphitheater, W. Hatfield St.
In the event of rain, concerts will be relocated to the Massena Fire Station, Andrews Street.
All concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.
The remaining schedule includes: Sandy Cook and the Extravaganza Band, Friday, July 29, 6-8 p.m.

Dinner begins at 5 p.m. and take-outs will be available starting at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Lawton died July 2, 2011.

Hermon man jailed for criminal contempt, unlawful imprisonment following alleged domestic dispute

HERMON – A Hermon man was sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail Friday after he was charged with felony criminal contempt and unlawful imprisonment during an alleged domestic dispute.
Franklin H. Mackin III, 44, 476 County Rt. 25, Hermon, was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, resisting arrest, two counts of second-degree harassment, and driving while intoxicated, deputies report.
According to deputies, Mackin was involved in a domestic dispute at 6:35 p.m. Friday in his home.

AKWESASNE – Coming into Lazore's Construction night at Mohawk International Raceway there were drivers in all divisions who were looking to put bad luck behind them and others trying to keep the momentum going.
Jeff Sykes and Nolan Swamp were able to put early season struggles behind them while Dylan Evoy and Dave Bissonnette looked to stay hot.
You throw in the first ever appearance for the Mod Lites and what we ended up with was a fantastic night of racing.

The Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company, under the artistic direction one of America’s greatest living choreographers, Paul Taylor, 82, has selected three works from his repertoire of 134 major works for its Sunday, June 24 performance as part of the Norwood Village Green Concert Series. The free performance begins at 7 p.m. in the green, but the audience should be seated by 6:50 p.m. In the event of rain, it will be held at Norwood-Norfolk Central School.
SUNY Potsdam volleyball earns team academic award

The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team was named a recipient of the 2010-11 American Volleyball Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced earlier this week.
The Bears posted a cumulative 3.62 grade point average for the 2010-11 academic year and was one of 88 NCAA Division III institutions to receive the prestigious honor.
