OGDENSBURG -- Grace Covenant Church will be offering Vacation Bible School Wednesday through Friday Aug. 10 – 12 from 6 – 8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
A closing program is planned Aug. 13 from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
Theme will be “Gold Rush - Discovering the Rock of Ages.”

Brier Hill Fire Department takes first at Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fair parade

BRIER HILL -- The Brier Hill Fire Department took first place in the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair Parade for Marching on Wednesday, Aug. 3.
Coming in second was the Hammond Fire and Rescue Department. Morristown Fire Department would have placed, but they were disqualified for sounding a siren on one of their units.

Man facing numerous charges for stealing ATV, leading deputies on chase down Route 56 in Potsdam

POTSDAM – A Snye, Que., man faces numerous charges after stealing an ATV and leading St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies on chase down State Rt. 56 Friday.
Cory T. Edwards, 26, 1451 Rimer Rd, Snye, Que., has been charged with failure to comply, reckless driving of an ATV, operation on a state highway, not wearing a helmet, and possession of stolen property.
According to deputies, they attempted to stop Edwards when they first spotted him driving down Rt. 56 without a helmet. He refused to pull over and eluded police by going off the roadway into a wooded area.

MALONE - Country music star Randy Travis, American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox, midway rides, a demolition derby and a rodeo are just a few of the long list of events at the 2011 Franklin County Fair Saturday, Aug. 6 through Sunday, Aug. 14.

Clarence H. Baker, 70, Massena

Clarence H. Baker, born on December 23, 1940, passed away at his home on August 5, 2011.
Clarence is survived by two brothers, James H. Baker of Massena and Micky Baker of Canton; four sisters, Marie Almond, of Midland, TX; MaryAnne Marashian of Massena; Bonnie Crites, of Massena, and Patti Stafford of Benton, AR. There are also many nieces and nephew, including his "favorite girlfriend" Emma. Clarence was predeceased by his mother, Jeannette Almond; father, Clarence A. Baker; and a brother, Richard Baker.

A gathering of family and friends for Kathryn D. Nearing, 91, Lake Street in Hammond, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hammond with Pastor Cathy Stevenson as the celebrant.
Kathryn died early Thursday morning, Aug 4, at her home under the care of Hospice and her family. Arrangements are with the Fox & Murray Funeral Home.

County board of legislators operations committee to meet Aug. 8 at Clifton-Fine

STAR LAKE -- The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators Operations Committee will meet Monday, Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Clifton-Fine Central High School auditorium, 11 Hall Ave.
The committee will not meet in the normal Board Chambers in Canton.
In addition to a discussion of agenda items, a tour of the former Jones and Laughlin site is planned.
