Newton Falls resident graduates from SUNY Delhi

William LaPlant of Newton Falls graduated May 2011 from the State University of New York College of Technology at Delhi with an AAS in Architectural Technology.
SUNY Delhi is a member of the State University of New York, the largest comprehensive university system in the U.S. Delhi's seamless approach to education includes over 60 academic programs, leading to one-year certificates, two-year associate degrees and bachelor's degrees in select program areas at Delhi.

Caiden Burns, 5, decided to sweep the steps of the Hermon Library Saturday. "We were spending the afternoon cleaning our porch, and he went over and decided to also sweep the steps of the library," said mom Cortney Sharlow. He is also the son of Brian Burns.

EDWARDS -- New York’s volunteer fire departments are experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members.
To address this vital need for volunteers, The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has developed the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP) as an incentive for people to serve in New York’s volunteer fire service.
Edwards Fire Chief Dale Barker notes that in most areas of New York, it is citizen volunteers who respond to emergency situations.

Tim Hortons, Papa Johns to open in Akwesasne

AKWESASNE -- Tim Hortons and Papa John's have granted franchises to Tarbell Management Group in the Western Door Convenience Store at 148 State Route 37
Tarbell’s Hortons franchise is one of just a few on Indian reservations. The Papa John's franchise is the first Native American franchise in their system.
The Tim Hortons franchise will feature a 24/7 full service, full menu location with a drive through. In addition a Tim Hortons kiosk will be set up at Eastern Door Convenience Store located 1592 State Route 37 and at Bear's Den at 425 State Route 37.

Workshops to help artists further their career start Sept. 20 in Potsdam

POTSDAM – The St. Lawrence County Arts Council is offering workshops to help artists around the North Country to further their arts careers.
Each costs $20 per person. They are held at the SLC Arts Council's Conference Room in Downtown Snell Hall, Potsdam. When you register for a class through the SLC Arts Council website, you have the option to pay on-line.

Masons to present slideshow on famed Canton canoeist J.H. Rushton Sept. 20

CANTON – The slideshow J. H. Rushton: The Man Behind the Canoes will be presented at the Masonic Lodge in Canton on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. by St. Lawrence County Historian Trent Trulock.
This free program is open to the general public.

'Walkin' for Wilz' 5k walk-run in Potsdam draws 319 participants, raises $17,092 for diabetes research

POTSDAM – The 3rd Annual Walkin' for Willz 5K Walk/Run to Cure Juvenile Diabetes drew 319 participants and 37 corporate sponsors and raised $17,092 for juvenile diabetes research.
The 5K Route started in Ives Park and wound through the beautiful Clarkson University campus on a perfectly crisp sunny September morning.
Walk teams included local college and high school sports teams, fraternities and sororities, family and corporate teams.

CP golf tournament raises $4,100 for programs, services

POTSDAM – The Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country golf tournament Sept. 10 raised about $4,100 for the association’s programs and services.
The tournament was organized by CPANC's summer golf committee, Makenzie Taylor, Ashley Peggs, Shannon Harvey, Stacey Barney and Mark Lyon, and drew 66 participants.

Public Health Department plans flu, pneumonia clinics in Potsdam, Gouverneur, Massena, Ogdensburg, Canton

The St. Lawrence County Public Health Department has announced a series of flu and pneumonia vaccine clinics.
Cost for the flu vaccine is $25; the pneumonia vaccine is $45.
The health department can also bill Medicare for those who bring their Medicare card with them.
The clinic schedule:
• Sept. 26 – Potsdam New Hope Community Church, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
• Sept. 27 – Gouverneur VFW, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
• Sept. 28 – Massena Community Center, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
• Sept. 29 – Ogdensburg Riverview Towers, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
