Cinema 10 in Potsdam to present ‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives/Loong Boonmee raleuk chat’ on Monday night

POTSDAM – Cinema 10 continues its Fall 2011 season Monday, Nov. 7 with a showing of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives/Loong Boonmee raleuk chat , a 2010 film from Thailand that won top prize at Cannes.
Films are shown on Mondays at 7:15 p.m. in the Roxy Theater, Main St.
Tickets are $4.50 general / $35 season or $3.50 student/senior/$25 season.
Uncle Boonmee is a rare piece of art that manages to be as mystifying and confusing as it is beautiful and poignant.

Seaway Valley senior citizens meeting in Madrid on Tuesday

SUNY Potsdam's swimming and diving teams sweep Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt.—The SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams won their first dual meet of the season at Norwich University on Saturday afternoon.
The men downed the Cadets 147-132 and the women won a 147-72 decision. The Bears won 21 of the meets 32 events.
The reigning SUNYAC Swimmer of the Week, junior Alexander Taylor (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston), was in top form again with wins in four events. Taylor was part of the winning 400 medley relay team (3:47.12) and won the 200 freestyle (1:50.96), 200 breaststroke (2:18.09), and the 200 individual medley (2:03.43).

Clarkson swim team falls to Oswego

POTSDAM -- Junior Sean Parnett (Clifton Park, NY) won a pair of events for the Clarkson University Swim team, but Oswego State swept the Golden Knights in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Fuller Pool.
The Golden Knights' men's team lost in a 132-100 decision against the Lakers, and the women's squad fell 129-90.

SUNY Canton men's basketball team run past ESF in season opener

CANTON -- The SUNY Canton men’s basketball team kicked off their 2011-12 season on Saturday playing their first ever home game in the college’s new athletic facility and the Roos had a successful debut with an 82-43 win over SUNY ESF.
The Roos used their own excitement of finally having a home court and they played off the energy of the several hundred people in attendance to post their second straight win over the Mighty Oaks in as many years.

SLU swimming and diving splits with RIT

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University swimming and diving team earned a split with visiting RIT on Saturday afternoon during Homecoming Weekend.
The women's team handily defeated the Tigers 140-99, while the men's team fell by the score of 167-75. The Saints will be back in action at the Liberty League Championships on December 2 and 3, hosted by Rensselaer.

St. Lawrence County to spend nearly $100,000 on Tuesday elections

St. Lawrence County will spend nearly $100,000 to keep polls open for 15 hours on election day, Nov. 8.
But when all the other tasks necessary to stage an election -- dealing with the machines, preparing ballots, and tabulating votes that come in by mail – the general election costs a lot more.
“A general election takes up most of our budget” which this year is close to $900,000, said Elections Commissioner Tom Nichols. “Pay for 400 inspectors can eat up a lot of money in a hurry.”

Winter farmers’ market setting up in SUNY Canton Roos House on Tuesdays

CANTON – The Canton Farmers' Market is setting up a winter market at SUNY Canton's new athletic building, Roos House, Tuesdays now through December from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Many of their growers will be there.
People can still buy fresh fruit and veggies, jams, baked goods (the pie lady will be there), meats, honey, fresh apple cider, maple syrup and more.
Some of the crafters and artisans will join in too.
