SLU field hockey team to Brazil for competition tour
CANTON - Members of the St. Lawrence University field hockey team will travel through Brazil from August 4 through 11, competing against three Brazilian National Select Teams and working with youth groups on their sport's skills.
Head Coach Fran Grembowicz says that the excursion has been planned for more than a year, with team members participating in a variety of fund-raising events to make the trip possible.
Next Historical Association brown bag lunch Thursday is on cheese in St. Lawrence County
CANTON – The St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s next brown bag lunch topic is near and dear to many in Northern New York: Cheese. They will host “St. Lawrence County, the Adirondack Crescent, and America's Cheese” on Thursday, Aug. 5 at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St.
This free program will be given by SLCHA members Russ Hall & Peg Rooney Hall, authors of the newly published “The Summer of a Thousand Cheeses.” They will share some of what they learned while doing research for the book over the past four years.
Akwesasne Wellness Day Thursday
AKWESASNE – The community of Akwesasne will be holding it's 20th annual Wellness Day on Thursday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mohawk International Raceway, Frogtown Road.
People can get their blood pressure, blood sugar, body fat analysis and cholesterol checked for free.
Kids can spend some time on the bounce houses and then meet Buttons the Clown and get their faces painted.
Everyone can grab a bite to eat from Big E's Concession stand and enjoy some delicious chicken.
The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce Town/Gown Committee is pleased to announce that the first nominee for the 2010 Pride-In-Potsdam award is the Potsdam Food Co-op, 24 Elm St. The Co-op was chosen by the committee for its well maintained exterior including the wonderful flowers as well as its clean and organized interior space. The Pride-In-Potsdam program is designed to encourage merchants in the village and town to maintain and improve their properties.
Quilter to demonstrate square technique in Canton on Aug. 4
CANTON – Borderline Quilters presents Peg Oppenheimer (certified square in a square technique instructor) on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 30 Miner St.
She will be presenting a trunk show and demonstrating the techniques.

ALBANY -- August has been proclaimed Forest Pest Awareness Month in New York State.
Working with their northeast neighboring states, officials in New York are taking the opportunity to educate citizens about the risks associated with forest pests and pathogens, and the actions they can take to help safeguard New York's valuable and abundant forests.
Canton library to offer program on water gardening Aug. 4
CANTON – Canton Free Library will offer the first program in its "Water Your Mind" summer reading series on Wednesday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with a water garden tour hosted by Anneke Larrance.
Participants will be invited to Anneke's home where she will teach the basics of water gardening, including situating a pond, layout, construction and maintenance.
Those attending will meet at the Canton Free Library at 6 p.m. and leave for her home at 6:15 p.m.
The program will end with a free lance walk around the rest of her gardens.
Calling hours for Mr. Leroy A. Madison, age 89, of Potsdam, will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home in Potsdam. Burial with military honors will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
Graveside services for 91-year old Mr. Howard Thomas Blair, Sr. will be held Friday, August 20, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Bayside Cemetery in Potsdam with Pastor Lee Sweeney officiating. Mr. Blair died July 31, 2010 at the Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, where he had been a resident for a short time. He resided in Manlius, and formerly of Potsdam.
Funeral services for Leda A. Brabant, age 83, of 800 Patterson St., will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Frary Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on August 4, 2010 at Frary Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Brabant passed away on August 1, 2010 at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.
