Winthrop's Rufa's Store closing, family seeking memories

WINTHROP – A community mainstay run by a beloved grocer and his family for 50 years is closing its doors on Dec. 31.

roprietor Peggy Cook has announced she will lock the doors for the last time at Rufa's Store, 633 State Rt. 11C, Winthrop, which she ran with her father, local institution Frankie Rufa.

Zontian Colleen Anderson accepted it on behalf of Renewal House, as a member of the Renewal House Board of Directors.
Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club works hard throughout the year to advance the status of women worldwide.

NNCS Class of 2012 All Night Party Committee to meet Jan. 3

NORWOOD – The next meeting of the Norwood-Norfolk Class of 2012 All Night Party Committee is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 in the high school cafeteria.
The Committee will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month.

Nettie Mae Green, 91, Norwood

Funeral services for 91 year old Nettie Mae Green, 667 County Route 48, Norwood, will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Knapps Station Community Church with Rev. Lee Sweeney presiding. Burial will be held in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lawrenceville. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Friday from 4-7 p.m. Nettie passed away Wednesday evening at home.
Nettie is survived by her sister, Aletha, Norwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Harold B. Demick Jr., 78, Potsdam

Funeral services for Harold B. Demick, Jr., 78, will be held on Monday, December 26, 2011 at 1pm at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam with Rev. William Hart officiating. Burial will follow in theBayside Cemetery in Potsdam. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, December 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friends may make donations in his memory to either the Potsdam Rescue Squad or Hospice. Mr. Demick died peacefully in his home on December 21.
Dora M. Dwyer, 83, Massena

A Memorial Mass for Dora M. Dwyer, 83, of Massena will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours and internment will be at the Calvary Cemetery. Dora died Wednesday (December 21, 2011) at the St. Regis Nursing Home.
Surviving Dora are three daughters, Julie and her husband Archie St. John of Massena, Marykay Dwyer of California and Clarette Hamilton of North Carolina; two sons, Thomas of Georgia and Patrick and his wife Barbara of Horseheads; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DEC tickets dozens of alleged deer poachers throughout St. Lawrence County

Dozens of alleged deer poachers have been charged during a deer-taking surveillance program throughout St. Lawrence County and the North Country, DEC announced.
DEC says Environmental Conservation Officers worked around the clock to target illegal deer shooting, particularly with the use of an artificial light, a practice commonly known as deer jacking. Typically, deer jacking occurs in remote rural areas at night.

NYPA offering free movies at Hawkins Point during holiday break Dec. 27-30

MASSENA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will mark the upcoming school holiday break by showing a series of family-friendly movies beginning Dec. 27, at the admission-free Hawkins Point Visitors Center.
Movies will be held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the visitors center theater. The schedule is as follows:

“Winnie the Pooh” at 10 a.m.
“Monte Carlo” at 1 p.m.
