Five musical groups, craft vendors to be featured at seventh annual Hankfest in Potsdam Aug. 11

POTSDAM -- The seventh annual Hankfest event will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday Aug. 11 from 1-5 p.m. at Ives Park.
The BirthPlace at Canton-Potsdam Hospital will benefit from donations collected. Not only is there a great line up of musical acts but Hankfest also offers door prizes, raffles, and kids games.
Craft and other vendors have been added this year. The Rescue Squad will be on hand at 2:30 p.m. for tours of the squad vehicle.
The musical line up this year includes: Oshier Country, Troy O’Brien, Classic Country, Country Percussion Group, and Larry Holly.

Ms. Beulah Adelaide Lazore, 95, of 38 Talcott Street, peacefully passed away on Saturday evening, July 28, 2012 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since Thursday. She had recently been a resident of the St. Regis Nursing Home.

Funeral services for Greg A. MacKinnon, 60 of County Rt # 40, Massena will be Tuesday, July3 1,2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Scott Fobare presiding. Greg died Saturday morning, July 28,2012 at the Massena Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Family and friends are invited to call Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena.
Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County fair opens Tuesday; new additions include monster trucks super-modified tractors

GOUVERNEUR -- Monster trucks and super-modified tractor pulls are new additions to St. Lawrence County Fair's annual events.
Fair food, farm animals, crafters and rides will be available at the fairgrounds from July 31 to until Aug. 5.
Musical entertainment at this year's fair includes Aaron Kelly, the Wolf Radio Texaco showdown and the Firefighter's Parade.
Vegetable and animal judging will also be held at the grand stand. Other events include the return of the demolition derby and the high school band parade.

Being active helps children to gain strong bones and muscles, increases their coordination, keeps their body healthy, and improves their mood and self-esteem.
If children are physically active at a young age, they will be more likely to be physically active in adulthood and thus, prevent obesity and related chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type II diabetes. The goal of engaging in physical activity for children should never be for to lose weight, but to be active and healthy.

New York Power Authority hosting free summer movie nights and matinees again this summer

MASSENA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will once again host its “Beat the Heat Summer Movie Days” every Tuesday this summer at the admission-free Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch in Massena.
The special summer campaign, which is in addition to the visitors center’s Friday matinee movie series, features a full day of free movies and popcorn every Tuesday during the months of July and August. Family-friendly films will be shown at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the visitor’s center’s air-conditioned auditorium.

POTSDAM -- All Clarkson University friends and supporters of Golden Knights athletics are invited to the 2012 John Bradshaw Memorial Golf Outing Friday, Aug, 24 at the Potsdam Town & Country Club.
Lunch and registration is at noon with a shotgun start 1 p.m.
Fee for golfers is $80 and includes 18-holes, cart and entry into the skins game. Buy-a-Mulligan will be $2 each, with a maximum of 10 per for use on any shot not on the green.

The Mormon religion is receiving extra attention these days as the campaign of Republican presidential candidate and Mormon Mitt Romney continues.
And St. Lawrence County’s Potsdam and Stockholm have a historic link with Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, which gave rise to Mormonism. Smith published the Book of Mormon, and gathered thousands of followers, built cities and temples, and created a religious culture that survived his death.

Ogdensburg Odd Fellows contribute to Remington Art Museum fund for building restoration

OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Independent Order of Odd Fellows recently presented the Frederic Remington Art Museum’s “Buy a Brick” My Hometown campaign with a check to help with the museum’s exterior restoration.
