Ogdensburg GreenMarket looking for new vendors at annual meeting Feb. 28

OGDENSBURG -- The annual meeting of the Ogdensburg GreenMarket will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m. at the Dobisky Visitor’s Center, 100 Riverside Ave.
As the market plans another season they are looking for vendors and customers to help grow the market. Last season the market moved the Wednesday market to the corner of Linden Street and Rt. 38. The market moved inside the Presbyterian Church in October to extend the season through mid-December.

Free hot meals served every Monday at Canton United Universalist Church

CANTON – The Campus Kitchen Project holds a free hot meal every Monday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The dinners are held at the Unitarian Universalist Church (next to the North Country Savings Bank).
They are completely free and open to the public.

Women's personal safety and self defense class at SLU Feb. 27

CANTON -- A women's personal safety and self-defense class will be presented in the multipurpose room of St. Lawrence University's Newell Fitness Center on Monday, Feb. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. SLU students, staff members, and women of the community are invited to attend. Topics will include awareness techniques, avoidance, escapes, throws, strikes, and safety concepts for traveling. Students in grades 9 through 12 may participate if accompanied by a parent.

Homeland Security alleges Canton man possessed, promoted child porn video on the Internet

CANTON – A Canton man has been charged with felony child pornography counts in connection with a case that originated with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Charles E. Powell, 61, of 35 Riverside Dr., has been charged with possessing obscene sexual performance by a child, a Class E felony, and promoting obscene sexual performance by a child, a Class D felony.

Tri-Town Squirts join Timberwolves Bantams and PeeWees in going to States

BRASHER FALLS -- After capturing the top seed in the Northern Zone Tier III Sectionals held in Thousand Islands Feb. 17-19, the Tri-Town Timberwolves Squirts hockey team are moving on to the state championships in Onondaga March 2-4.
The Timberwolves Squirt team is one of three teams from Tri-Town who will be competing in States.
The Timberwolves PeeWees and Bantams will also be in States on March 2-4.

Yoga Basics sessions starting Feb. 28 at Colton-Pierrepont

COLTON -- Yoga Basics will continue at the Colton-Pierrepont Central School on Tuesdays.
Two five-week sessions are scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 27 and April 17 to May 15. Classes will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The fee per five-week session is $40 -- no “drop-ins.”
You don’t need to be young, thin, flexible or athletic to do yoga. This class is suitable for all levels of fitness and designed specifically for individuals who are new to yoga.

BOCES Norwood Adult Education Center to offer Heartsaver First Aid course Feb. 28

NORWOOD – St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES’ Norwood Adult Education Center has a Heartsaver First Aid course scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. Feb. 28.
The course teaches students the skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services arrives. Students learn how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies.
Upon completion, students receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid Course Card that is valid for two years.
Cost is $50, plus $5 payable to instructor for the card.

Goldenaires Singing Valentines a success

The Canton Goldenaires send a big thank you to all who helped us with another successful Singing Valentines program. Many flower shops contributed flowers for our program this year. With the help of these local merchants, we will be able to provide more scholarships for more seniors in our local high schools. Starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m., we delivered more than 50 Singing Valentines to restaurants, school class rooms, homes, and places of work.

Support ‘legal’ families

In response to (“Stop NYS Dreams Act,” Sound Off, Jan. 25-31). Finding it unbelievable that something like this would even be proposed, I read the act on Senator Gillibrand’s website. I don’t understand what part of “illegal” our politicians do not understand. We need to support our “legal” hard-working families first; find a magic potion to do that and you will get my support. This is just good old common sense...something I find very little of when looking at the political arena these days.
