Private funeral services for 81 year old Mr. Glenn E. Scott will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the Garner Funeral Service with Rev. Lee Sweeney celebrant. Burial will take place in the spring at the Crary Mills Cemetery. Contributions in Mr. Scott’s memory can be made to the Hospice and Palliative of the St. Lawrence Valley. Mr. Scott passed away on December 28, 2011 surrounded by his loving family and Hospice and Palliative of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Sally Anne Rayome, 75, Massena, passed away Monday, December 26, 2011, at her winter residence in Lake Wales, Florida.
She was born July 27, 1936 in Watertown, to the late Vincent Thomas and Adelaide Mary Anderson Froysell. She was a homemaker and was a member of the St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massena. Sally was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother. She was known for her laughter, her love for her family and friends, her love of gardening, cooking and her generosity. She and Joe really enjoyed the past eight years wintering in Florida.

Owens asks for grassroots funding to send message to 'self-funding' opponent Doheny

U.S. Congressman Bill Owens is calling on his constituents to provide grassroots funding to make a point to his “self-funding” opponent Matt Doheny that regional issues, not Washington politics, are what’s important.
Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, wrote a letter to supporters reminding them that Dec. 31 is another fundraising deadline when political coffers will be scrutinized.

St. Lawrence River Research and Education Fund application deadline Jan. 1

MASSENA -- The deadline to apply for funds from the St. Lawrence River Research and Education Fund is Jan. 1.
Eligible projects would be for environmental research or educational programs related to the ecology of the St. Lawrence River Valley. Proposed projects must pertain to the St. Lawrence River, the adjoining terrestrial features or a tributary within the St. Lawrence River Valley.
Applications for funding will be accepted from local or state education organizations, tribal education organizations, colleges or universities and not-for-profit groups.

Representatives from Malawi, Africa to visit Canton, Ogdensburg Presbyterian churches Jan. 8-10

CANTON – Sam Chirwa and Grace Chiumia, field directors from Malawi, Africa, of the Women Of Grace Widows’ Fund, will be visiting Canton on Jan. 8 and 9 and Ogdensburg on the 10th.
They will be speaking at the 10 a.m. worship service at the Canton First Presbyterian Church at 17 Park St. on Sunday.
A potluck dinner will be held in their honor at the church at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Dropping temps, snow showers combine to make slippery roads this afternoon and evening

The National Weather Service cautions St. Lawrence County drivers to be careful on roads this afternoon and evening as the combination of snow showers and falling temperatures produce slippery surfaces.
Winter has finally arrived with no intentions of going anywhere for the foreseeable future, according to the NSW forecast.
Communities throughout the county can expect to see between 1 to 2 inches of snow pile up today with slightly more accumulation tonight. Meanwhile the temperature might read around 13 degrees, but with 17 mph winds, it feels more like -5.

Paul Smith's College VIC to offer even more trails for x-country skiers, snowshoers

PAUL SMITHS – Cross-country skiers and snowshoers have even more terrain to explore this winter at the Paul Smith’s College VIC.
“We’ve made some significant upgrades,” said Brian McDonnell, the VIC’s director. “We’ve almost doubled the size of the trail system, and we now have trails to suit both classic and skate skiers.” A groomer purchased by the college last winter will be used to maintain the expanded trail network.
