Science cafes return to Potsdam Sept. 22
POTSDAM -- Local university professors will lead the discussions at a new “Science Café” series starting Wednesday, Sept. 22, in a new location and at a new time.
Science Cafés this fall will take place Wednesday evenings at 7:15 p.m. on the second floor of La Casbah, 6 Elm St.
Science Cafés bring together local university and college professors and townspeople in a relaxed, informal setting, such as coffeehouses and pubs. The speaker makes a short presentation about a topic in his or her field, and then opens up the floor to discussion.
Historian to discuss rehabilitation of disabled soldiers in American history Aug. 26 at Clarkson University
POTSDAM -- University of Pennsylvania historian Beth Linker will speak on “War's Waste: The Rehabilitation of Disabled Soldiers in American History” on Thursday, Aug. 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Barben Rooms of Clarkson University's Cheel Campus Center.
In her lecture, Linker will describe how the notion of rehabilitation eventually supplanted life-long pensions for veterans. She will also explain what that means in terms of the present.
Potsdam Central class of '61 meets Aug. 12 to plan 50th reunion
POTSDAM – Potsdam Central School’s class of '61 will meet at Sergi's, Thursday, Aug. 12, at noon to plan their 50-year reunion being held July 8 and 9, 2011.

CANTON – SeaComm Federal Credit Union will host a member appreciation day with a barbecue Thursday, Aug. 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Canton branch, 101 E. Main St.
Free hot dogs and beverages will be served.

Eileen M. Hiter Gerrish, 89, of Potsdam died Sunday, August 8, 2010 at her home of 40 years surrounded by her loving family. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Msgr. Robert Aucoin officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam.
Memorial Mass for Sharon R. Legault, 50, of Brasher Falls, will be held Thursday August 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church in Louisville with Rev. Donald J. Manfred presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Massena Humane Society or the American Cancer Society. Sharon R. Legault passed away early Monday morning (August 9, 2010) at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Memorial service for June M. Saucier, 89, formerly of LSBH in Brasher, will be held on Friday (August 20, 2010) at 12:00 noon at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Massena. There will be no public calling hours. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Norfolk.
June passed away on August 9, 2010 at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena.
Irene M. Fayette, 89, passed away peacefully, Saturday, August 7, 2010 at her home in Russell.
Irene was born on June 13, 1921 in Massena, daughter of the late Henry and Ethel Revier Clemmo and attended Massena schools. On September 12, 1942, she married Carlton F. Fayette in Massena. Mr. Fayette passed away January 26, 1982. Mrs. Fayette enjoyed square dancing with the Seaway Squares, sewing and quilting.
Canton's Coakley Hardware raises $2,000 for recovering Cpl. Howell
Customers, employees, and family at Coakley Ace and Carpet One in Canton raised $2,000 in donations for the family of Aaron Howell of Parishville, who is recovering at Walter Reed Armed Forces Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Aaron, a Marine corporal, is recovering from major combat wounds, including the loss of both legs. Both Coakleys and Evans and White Ace Hardware have been raising funds for the family to help defray transportation and other costs incurred by Aaron and the family.
