Seminar on helping small businesses collect debts to be held in Massena in September
MASSENA -- Northern Asset Recovery will be offering a seminar designed to assist small businesses in collecting their debts.
The seminar, “Credit and Collections in Today’s Market” will cover fundamentals of collections, skip-tracing,The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, negotiation, collection tips and more.
The seminar will be of particular benefit to those in the credit and collections field, a small business owner, or anyone who is involved in collecting accounts receivable. The seminar is tentatively set for mid-September in Massena.
League of Women Voters to hold next meeting Aug. 17 in Ogdensburg
OGDENSBURG -- The St. Lawrence County League of Women Voters has its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the Dobinsky Center, 100 Riverside Ave.
All LWV members and interested community members -- men and women -- are welcome.
As a non-partisan organization, the LWV welcomes citizens of any declared or undeclared political orientation. The League focuses on voters and voting: the August meting will focus on fall elections in St. Lawrence County. Plans will include candidate forums.
Franklin County Fair continues though Aug. 15
MALONE – In addition to several music acts, the Franklin County Fair will be holding a first-ever parade, demolition derby and midway rides and games, Aug. 7 through 15, at the fairgrounds, 606 E. Main St.

Madrid ‘Wet & Wild vacation Bible school' begins Aug. 9
MADRID – A Wet & Wild vacation Bible school Aug. 9 to 12, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Madrid Community Park.
The school is open to ages 4-12; teens are welcome as helpers. Area churches are sponsoring the event.

Mrs. Nancy Jean Meritt, 76, of 72 Liberty Ave, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 afternoon at the home of her daughter.
She was born July 24, 1934 in Rochester. She attended schools in Avon. She married Harold “Jack” Meritt on August 21, 1954 in Avon. He predeceased her on September 12, 2006. They lived in Geneseo for many years, moving to Massena in 2001.
Nancy was a homemaker who enjoyed flower gardening and painting.
Private funeral services for 86-year old Mrs. Gloria Beth Thompson will be held at the convenience of the family. Mrs. Thompson passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at her home under the care of Hospice. Burial will be in the Foxwood Mausoleum, Ogdensburg. Arrangements are with the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam.

Funeral services for Martha Hulett Crownhart, age 74, of Leesburg, FL and also of Livingston Drive, Ogdensburg, will be held on Monday August 9, 2010 at Frary Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Lorraine A. Wills officiating. Burial will be in Ogdensburgh Cemetery. Mrs. Crownhart passed away on August 4, 2010 at her camp at Livingston Drive surrounded by her family.
Denise Newman Paquette, 44, of 2657 County Route 19, died unexpectedly August 5, 2010 at her home.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 9th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Canton with Rev. Douglas Luscia officiating. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton.
River Park Concert Series in Gouverneur continues with Canton Goldenaires
GOUVERNEUR – North Country barbershop chorus Canton Goldenaires will perform Sunday, Aug. 8 as part of The Riverview Park Concert Series in Gouverneur this summer.
All Concerts begin at 4 p.m. in the park on Route 58 (Natural Dam Road). A small donation to the Riverview Park is suggested to help maintain the facility and keep the program going.

• Aug. 22: Amber Nezezon - renowned fiddle player and folk singer
