Boat motor stolen in Waddington, sheriffs seek the public's assistance

WADDINGTON -- St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the theft of an outboard motor recently taken from a boat on the McGinnis Road, according to deputies.
The motor is a black 15 hp mercury outboard, the department said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 379-2222.

Schooner Lois McClure to have free tours Sept. 16 in Morristown

MORRISTOWN -- To commemorate the War of 1812 the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum's Canal Schooner Lois McClure will stop in Morristown during its fall tour.
The replica schooner will have free tours at the River Watch Marina, Morristown Harbor on Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Adirondack Museum Curator Caroline M. Welsh to speak Sept. 16 in Canton

CANTON -- Adirondack Museum Curator Caroline M. Welsh will speak Monday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in Griffiths Arts Center, room 123, St. Lawrence University.
Welsh is an art historian and director emerita of the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Her work includes positions at the Smithsonian Institution and the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Hurdles remain before new St. Lawrence County hazmat team can be organized

CANTON – St. Lawrence County will resuscitate its hazardous materials response team, but Allen Rickett, who will head the team, says there are many hurdles to overcome first.
Rickett, a retired Ogdensburg firefighter and county fire investigator, says the new team will consist of at least 12 members from Ogdensburg and include both paid and volunteer members. Under the new agreement, the county will pay the City of Ogdensburg $17,500 annually. For the remainder of 2013, that price was prorated at $4,375.

Remington Museum’s members’ exhibit awards announced

OGDENSBURG – Winners in the Frederic Remington Art Museum’s 2013 Members’ Juried Art Exhibition have been announced.
The 2013 Public’s Choice Award went to Denny Morreale for “Raurri at the Sandbanks, 2011.” Morreale was awarded a framed print of Frederic Remington’s 1890
painting, Antoine's Cabin.

POTSDAM-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present a free concert featuring guest artist Kathleen Roland, soprano, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.
She will be accompanied by Crane faculty member Kirk Severtson on piano. The performance will feature art songs by Swedish composers.

CANTON -- The DuCote Family Karate Club, formerly Steve's Contact Karate Club, will begin offering lessons Sept. 16, at the Canton Town and Village Recreation Department, 90 Lincoln St.
Sensei Steve DuCote, a fourth Dan Black Belt, will teach classes. DuCote began training in 1991 in the Shorin-Ryu Contact system of karate at dojos located in Hogansburg. He opened "Steve's Contact Karate Club" in Malone in January of 2005 and at second location under the same name in Plattsburgh in January of 2006.

Mr. John Howard Short, age 82, of Potsdam, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2013 at his home in the town of Potsdam from pancreatic cancer.
