Northbound and The Debt to take the stage for Massena's Concert in the Park Aug. 4
MASSENA – Local bands Northbound and The Debt will take the stage from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4 as the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce continues its 2011 Concert in the Park series season.
All concerts are held at the Springs Park Amphitheater, W. Hatfield St.
In the event of rain, concerts will be relocated to the Massena Fire Station, Andrews Street.
All concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.
The remaining schedule includes: The Acoustic Brothers, Thursday, Aug. 11, 6-8 p.m.; Lost at Sea, Thursday, Aug. 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Pierrepont man charged with DWI with child in vehicle
PIERREPONT – A Butternut Ridge Road man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and having a child in the vehicle.
Martin P. Johnson, Jr., 30, 267 Butternut Ridge Rd., was arrested by St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies at 7:10 p.m. following a complaint that he was drunk and driving with a child less than 15 years old in the vehicle.
Johnson faces felony counts of DWI, felony aggravated DWI, and a violation of Leandra’s Law, DWI with a child in the vehicle.
Johnson was arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court and ordered held on $5,000 bail.

Longtime Canton bar, restaurant demolished; 80 years of history recalled, including visit from Budweiser Clydesdales
CANTON – The building where a longtime downtown eatery was housed was knocked down this week to make room for a new convenience store.
A Nice & Easy store is going up on Miner Street where Barr’s Restaurant – better known as Connie Barr’s – had sat for decades.
Norwood Beach Triathlon accepting registrations
NORWOOD -- This year’s Norwood Beach Triathlon, with a swim, a bike and a run, starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Norwood Beach Recreation Park on Lake Shore Drive.
The event will consist of a quarter-mile open water swim, 15-mile bike and four-mile run. Participants can choose to do the entire race as an individual or as part of a two- or three-member team.
All proceeds from this year’s race will go to two local organizations, the John C. Purvis Scholarship Fund and Hospice of St. Lawrence County.
Potsdam Farmers’ Market now open Wednesdays
POTSDAM – The Potsdam Farmer’s Market is now open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Sept. 28.
The Wednesday market will feature seasonal fruits and vegetables, meats, maple syrup, baked goods and crafts. EBT, WIC and seniors coupons are accepted.
The market is located behind the municipal parking lot on Main Street next to Ives Park downtown.
The Saturday Farmer’s Market will continue weekly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 29.
Waddington library to host open house Aug. 3 to showcase new improvements
WADDINGTON – The Waddington Hepburn Library will host an open house and dedication of the new reading area from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3.
The event will be an opportunity to showcase a number of improvements, additions and updates made over the past three years to both the building and services the library provides.
The official dedication of the Mildred Haggett Reading Area will also take place during the open house.

Assemblywoman Russell concerned SUNY Canton president's possible departure affecting community
Assemblywoman Addie Russell says she is concerned about the uncertainty in the community over speculation that SUNY Canton President Joseph Kennedy might be leaving the college.
An announcement from the 118th Assembly ‘River’ District Democrat notes that SUNY Canton educates many North Country residents, and is a large employer and major component of the fabric of Canton and the entire St. Lawrence County community.
DeKalb pair wins Bassmasters Black Lake tournament, takes lead for Team of the Year
BLACK LAKE – The Northern New York Bassmasters recently held their fourth tournament of the season at Black Lake.
