A winter storm warning is in effect for St. Lawrence County from 1 p.m. to Thursday at 7 p.m. with heavy snow mixed with sleet and ice at times, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible, with ice accumulation from a trace to a tenth of an inch, NWS says.
Travel could be very difficult, the service says. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Snowfall could exceed one inch per hour at times tonight.
Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
their vehicle in case of an emergency, and allow extra time if travel is necessary.
Expect a high temperature today around 26 with light winds, NWS says. Snow will likely begin after 4 p.m. with 4-8 inches possible today and another 2-4 possible early Thursday.
Forecasters say wind gusts as high as 20 mph will begin tonight and continue into Thursday as well.
