St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Detective Thomas Caringi confirmed that the recent fire where West Stockholm Fire Chief Robert White died was accidental.

White collapsed Thursday evening after responding to the fire that destroyed a house at 415 State Highway 11B. The coroner ruled his death to be of natural causes.

Caringi confirmed that the fire was started with a lighter by juvenile. A mattress was allegedly set on fire, but was thought to be extinguished and was moved to the back porch of the home.

However, the mattress rekindled and caught the home on fire.

Caringi said no charges would be filed.

Meanwhile traffic congestion is expected on 11B as services for Fire Chief Robert White are set to take place Wednesday.

The West Stockholm Fire Department recently released a statement saying they wish to inform the public that on Wednesday Dec. 11 there will be heavy traffic congestion in and around SUNY Potsdam and US highway 11B.

There will be a large presence of fire and EMS apparatus on US 11B, and SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall.

“We ask that any unnecessary traffic avoid that area of Potsdam and to find an alternative route in regards to using US 11B. Thank you in advance for your cooperation,” a release from the department said.
