Waddington man re-elected to state School Boards Association

Dana Smith of Waddington, vice president of the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES board, has been re-elected to the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Board of Directors. His third two-year term begins Jan. 1.

The association provides advocacy, training and information to school boards in support of their mission to govern the state’s public schools. The NYSSBA board establishes policies to supervise, control and direct the business of the association. As Area 6 Director, Smith represents school boards in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and St. Lawrence counties.

Smith has been a member of St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES board since 2002. He formerly served on the Madrid-Waddington School Board from 2003-2009, the Horseheads School Board and the Schuyler-Chemung-Tioga BOCES board.

Smith received a Master of Boardsmanship Award from NYSSBA in 2004. He currently serves on the association’s executive committee, board operations committee and student health and safety task force. He also serves as president of the St. Lawrence-Lewis Counties School Boards Association.

A retired major in the U.S. Army Reserves, Smith worked in the New York State Department of Correctional Services for 27 years, retiring as superintendent from the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility.

Smith is a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Massena, and a member of the Waddington Council of the Knights of Columbus. He is also a community advisory member of the Clark House Board of Directors. He is a Disabled American Veterans volunteer driver, AARP driver safety instructor, and a member of the St. Mary’s Church choir in Waddington. He is a former member of Frederick Remington Art Museum’s board of directors.
