'The Voice' contestant with Potsdam connection advances to next round

POTSDAM — Selkii, a contestant on “The Voice” on NBC who has a local connection to the North Country, advanced to the second round.

“Well, she made it through to the ‘cross battles’ even though she did not sing well and lost the audience vote,” according to Carol Simpson, Selkii’s mother in-law.

Selkii is married to 1987 Potsdam Central graduate Edzui L. Szumowski.

“Blake (Shelton) saved her, re-iterating she is one of his favorite performers ever’, Simpson said. “It has been a roller coaster ride.”

This coming Monday, April 22, she will perform along with the other 15 remaining contestants and results are aired the following day.

“Each coach has one save and one steal and 5 of the 8 were used last night, leaving only 3 for next week,” Simpson said. “After next week, I think it all goes to audience votes. So Selkii will continue to be at a disadvantage, no matter how well she sings.”

Simpson is hopeful North Country viewers will tune in and vote for her daughter in-law.

The show airs at 8 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays.
