CANTON – The search continues for a Village of Canton treasurer.

But on Wednesday night, village trustees approved the hiring of a deputy treasurer.

Melinda Pearson, an account clerk with the St. Lawrence County Community Services, will assume her duties on May 31 at a pay rate of $22 per hour. She replaces Tracy Fuller who served a brief stint as deputy treasurer.

“I’m really excited. Melinda brings a lot of experience for us,” said Deputy Mayor Carol Pynchon.

It was noted that that initial advertisement for a full-time treasurer attracted a limited pool of candidates.

It was also pointed out that Pearson has training in customer service and communication skills.

In all, four candidates were interviewed for the position.

Pearson resides in the Town of Canton.

In other action, the village board approved the waiver of a residency requirement for newly-hired village superintendent Timothy Bacon.

“The Board of Trustees hereby determines that good cause exists sufficient to waive the village residency requirement for Mr. Bacon who resides in the Town of Canton. His residence is within a reasonable distance of the village. His residency does not impede Mr. Bacon’s ability to perform the duties of his position. Accordingly, it is hereby resolved that Timothy Bacon shall not be required to reside within the geographic boundaries of the Village of Canton as a condition of his Superintendent,” the resolution states.
