Veteran town politician named Canton Deputy Town Supervisor

James T. Smith, a former town supervisor, was appointed to the position by Canton Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley.

Smith fills the deputy town supervisor’s post vacated by Bob Washo who resigned from the town board effective Dec. 27.

In a letter to the board, Washo indicated that he wanted to focus more of his time on his family and his farm.

The task at hand is to find a replacement for Washo who has one year remaining on his four-year term. Washo has served on the town board for 7 years.

Washo’s replacement was an agenda item on the town’s organizational meeting that preceded Wednesday night’s regular board meeting with no action taken.

Smith is currently in his fourth term as a town councilman. He served on the St. Lawrence County Legislature from 1984 to 1993 and was town supervisor from 1994 to 2001.

In other appointments, Linda Casserly was named Canton Historian, Town Code Enforcement Officer Mike McQuade and Erik Johnson were appointed fire wardens, Dan Moyer was hired as the town’s dog control officer, John Casserly was reappointed to the town planning board as was Matt Scafidi-McGuire to the town zoning board of appeals.

In other organizational meeting matters:

Monthly town board meetings will continue to be held on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Canton Municipal Building.

Proposed dates of joint town/village meeting are Jan. 25, April 26, July 26, and Oct. 25.

Community Bank, N.A. was named the town’s official bank depository.

North Country This Week and The St. Lawrence Plaindealer were designed as official newspapers.

The mileage allowance rate was set at 65.5 cents per mile.
