CANTON - LeadingAge New York, formerly NYAHSA (New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging), recently recognized United Helpers’ Robin Leonard, Staff Development Assistant for Maplewood Campus, with a 2012 Employee of Distinction Award.

The LeadingAge NY Long Term Care Employee of Distinction Awards program recognizes the extraordinary efforts of front line staff at New York's not-for-profit, mission-driven and public nursing homes, senior housing, adult care facilities, and other long term care providers.

Leonard, who joined the United Helpers organization in 1995, was recognized specifically for her many contributions to resident care and her demonstrated commitment to going above and beyond her job requirements. She was nominated by her supervisor and co-workers citing her advocacy for education, assistive equipment and other tools that enhance resident quality of life, quality of care, or her fellow employee's work environment.

Leonard has championed specialized training and safety programs, led employee fundraising efforts, and is an active participant in several community events: Relay for Life, St. Lawrence County Memory Walk, and the CAVA (Citizens Against Violent Acts) Walk.

"Robin is known for coming in during her off time to sit with a resident who was at the end of life," recalled Kimberly McFaddin, Maplewood Assistant Administrator. "On another occasion, she used a weekend and her own benefit time to take a disabled resident to her granddaughter's wedding. Her sincerity and compassion toward her residents is visible and reflects her commitment to her work."

Leonard has been selected by peers twice to receive the Society of the United Helpers' Margaret R. Spies Award, perhaps the most coveted award recognizing select members of the United Helpers Direct Care staff.
