MACOMB – St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies have charged two individuals with multiple felonies following a traffic stop on County Route 10 in the Town of Macomb.

Deputies say Barry J. Crawford, 46, and Crystal L. Smithers, 44, were found to be in possession of 81 grams of cocaine.

Police say a portion of the drugs were thrown from the vehicle to avoid detection and to avoid arrest, however police were able to locate the drugs shortly after.

Smithers is also facing an additional charge of tampering with evidence after she allegedly inserted one ounce of cocaine inside her body cavity to avoid detection by police.

Both were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (B Felony- more than one half ounce) and tampering with physical evidence (E Felony).

Bothe were arraigned in Gouverneur Town Court.

Crawford was sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility on no bail for being a five-time convicted felon.

Smithers was released due to the New York State bail reform, police say.

Both are due back in court at a later date.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by New York State Police, NYSP VGNET, U.S. Border Patrol, Home Security Investigations, Ogdensburg Police and the St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force.
