Twice is nice for Mat Williamson at Mohawk

Night two of the Mohawk Nationals saw great weather and another packed area as the Super DirtCar Series, DirtCar Sportsman North Regional Series and the Can Am Mod Lite Series were all on hand and brought a total of over 100 cars to the pit area. It was the final race of the year for many drivers, and all were looking for a big pay day.

$10, 000 dollars and a guaranteed spot at NAPA Auto Parts Super Dirt Week 48 was on the line for the Big Block Modified Super DirtCar Series at Mohawk and Demetrios Drellos who gained a lot of experience at the speedway in 2019, was able to take command of the field in the opening laps with Erick Rudolph, Larry Wight, Ryan Arbuthnot and Billy Dunn giving chase. Driver were all sailing around the top side of the speedway early on as Drellos and Rudolph were the two fastest on track as they pulled away from the field by lap 10.

Lapped traffic came into play on lap 18 as Drellos was held up by cars in front of him which allowed Rudolph, Dunn and the rest of the top 5 to close the gap. On lap 33 the first yellow flew for Cameron Black who slowed on the front stretch with a problem and eventually came to a stop in turn 3. On the restart it was Drellos in control over Billy Dunn and Brewerton winner Mat Williamson. As good as Drellos was running, only a mistake was going to allow for Dunn to get by, which is what happened on lap 43 as Drellos overshot turn 1 allowing Dunn and Williamson to get by for the top two spots with Drellos falling to third. Lapped cars again came into play which was the only opportunity for Williamson to get by as track conditions started to change quickly.

On lap 49 Williamson took the high lane and grabbed the lead as Dunn struggled in traffic. Once in front Mat Williamson was able to set his own pace as Dunn closed back in to challenge for the lead with points leader Matt Sheppard Drellos and Rudolph completing the top 5. On lap 56 Ryan Arbuthnot would spin to a stop in turn 4 bringing out the yellow. When the green flew Williamson was able to hold the lead with no change in the top 5 as Dunn, Sheppard, Drellos and Rudolph continued to remain in those spots. With everyone locked to the bottom it was difficult to pass, but Tim Fuller would make a move to the bottom as he took 5th from Rudolph late in the going as the laps wound down. Over the final laps Mat Williamson would hold a steady line and would go unmatched to claim back to back wins on the Super DirtCar Series and the 4th of his career. Billy Dunn claimed his 2nd runner up finish of the weekend over Matt Sheppard, Erick Rudolph and David Hebert, who made a move by Tim Fuller to complete the top 5.

The DirtCar Sportsman North Regional Series took to the speedway for a 50-lap event and Robert Delormier would lead early on over Brian Hudson, 2019 track champion Shane Pecore, Brianna Ladouceur and Ryan Stabler. Delormier was hooked up on this night as he pulled away to a comfortable lead in the opening laps. The caution would fly on lap 5 as Jean Francois Leblanc and Delbert Legrow Jr. would tangle in turn 4. When the green flew it was no contest as Delormier continued to remain in control as the battle for 2nd heated up between Hudson and Pecore. The newly crowned champion would get by for the number two position bringing Ladouceur to 3rd but both still had a long way to go to catch the leader.

Delormier had a huge lead past the halfway point, a half track to be exact, as Pecore and Ladouceur remained close for 2nd and 3rd with Devin Willis making it to 4th and Ryan Stabler rounding out the top 5. Much like the Super DirtCar Series event all drivers were forced to the bottom making it difficult to pass but Robert Delormier was having no issues with that as he worked by lapped cars without issues an continued to put more distance between himself Pecore and Ladouceur. On lap 28 Gabriel Cyr slowed and headed for the pits leaving one more chance for everyone to try and challenge for the lead.

On the restart Robert Delormier was determined to stay in front and that’s exactly what he did as he pulled away and went unchallenged to lead all 50 laps to score his 2nd straight tour win and 3rd of his career in the DirtCar Sportsman Series. Shane Pecore would hold onto the regional point lead with a 2nd place effort as Brianna Ladouceur Devin Willis and Ryan Stabler completed the top 5.

In the 20 lap Can Am Mod Lite Series event it was Jeff May the early pace setter over Harley Brown, Tucker Halliday, Eric Caron and Rick Demo. With 34 cars in the field everyone was looking for the best line and Friday night winner Michael Forcier would lose the handle on his machine as he spun in turns 3 and 4. When the green flew it was May back in control but Tucker Halliday emerged as the driver to beat. Halliday found something on the high side that nobody could find and was able to get by for the top spot and begin to author a dominant performance. Tucker Halliday had the fastest car on track leaving Jeff May and Harley Brown to figure out a way to catch him.

On the final lap Tucker Halliday would have the race well in hand, problem was his motor would not let him complete the final lap as a big cloud of smoke emerged from the Halliday machine leaving Jeff May the leader. With Oil all over the track officials would end the race there as Jeff May would claim his 2nd Mod Lite win of the season at Mohawk over Harley Brown, May would also be crowned the 2019 Can Am Mod Lite Series Champion.

Another great season is in the books at Mohawk International Raceway. The 21st annual Ironman Slick Track Endruo is all that remains next Saturday afternoon.
