CANTON - Patients looking to have a mammography with 3D technology now have a third location to choose from through St. Lawrence Health System.

During the recent ribbon cutting ceremony it was announced that a Siemens Mammomat Inspiration PRIME with Tomosynthesis 3D digital mammography service is now available at the EJ Noble Building, 80 East Main Street, Canton. St. Lawrence Health System has offered 3D mammography at Canton-Potsdam Hospital since 2015, and at Gouverneur Hospital since 2017.

“This is the gold standard for early detection and offers a substantial increase in accuracy and detection of cancerous breast tumors in all types of breast tissue,” stated President and CEO David Acker.

Chief Radiologist G. Michael Maresca, MD, has been part of the hospitals’ imaging service line for 28 years, and when he first arrived he told the staff he wanted to make mammography a priority. With the advancement of technology, he credits the 3D mammography machines with finding more tumors at an early stage.

“St. Lawrence Health System has been fantastic in taking care of its community by providing the best technology and the best equipment. We are proud to offer state-of-the-services for our patients,” Maresca said.

Acker said the goal within St. Lawrence Health System is to ensure the staff meets gold standard expectations, and the care all patients receive is the very best possible.

“We’ve raised the bar to ensure residents of the North Country have access to advanced breast imaging. Partnered with our Automated Volume Breast Scanner screening tool, images and data collected for Dr. Maresca are far superior to traditional methods and 3D mammography alone,” he said.

Acker and Maresca recognized the imaging staff and thanked them for their dedication to the patients and the system.

“Our staff has been great. We have a lot of longevity here - over 150 years of mammo experience,” Maresca said of the six mammography technologists at the ribbon cutting.

The addition of the 3D mammography machine at EJ Noble was made possible through support from the New York State Rural Healthcare Access Grant Program and the Charles R. Wood Foundation.
