POTSDAM -- A vehicle crashed into the Post Office Monday on Union Street, according to Potsdam police.

Potsdam Fire Department was dispatched to the vicinity of 12 Elm Street following a reported motor vehicle accident at 3:14 p.m.

Engine 49 responded upon dispatch with Fire Driver Jerry Robar, and Firefighter Jay Bradish, fire officials said. Fire crews found a vehicle had been driven into the Potsdam Post office on the Union Street side of the building.

The sole occupant of the vehicle was out of the vehicle on arrival, fire officials said.

Police said the vehicle was driven by 87-year old John Ranlett of Potsdam.

Potsdam Volunteer Rescue squad members evaluated Ranlett, who declined transport to the hospital.

Ranlett was cited for speed not reasonable and prudent, police said.

Union Street was shut off to thru traffic and members remained on scene until the vehicle was removed by Skippy's Towing, Potsdam fire said.

Potsdam Fire Units were back in service at 3:56 p.m.
