POTSDAM – More than 200 golfers and many sponsors contributed to a record $93,000 raised at this year’s SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic on Sept. 8.
The 23rd annual tournament broke last year’s fundraising records.
Last year, the event raised $85,000, which was a part of almost $2.3 million in scholarships awarded to 960 recipients.
Northland Associates, this year's title sponsor, endowed a scholarship, and the recipient this year, Michael Talbot, was the student speaker at the awards ceremony following the tournament.
Other major sponsors this year included Renzi Foodservice, Honeywell, Casella Waste Services, J.E. Sheehan Contracting Corporation, Mach Architecture & Engineering, Inc., SYSCO Albany, Time Warner Cable Business Class and Usherwood Office Technology.
"This tournament wouldn't be what it is without the more than 100 sponsors that we have at all levels, as well as the many volunteers who assist in the organization and operation of the tournament," said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller. "We will continue our mission to raise awareness and funds for student scholarships."
The team sponsored by CKON Radio in Hogansburg was the winning Summit Flight team. Members of the team included Andy Cook, Julia Back-Skidders, Victoria Thompson, Cole Cree, Timmy Thompson and Jeremiah Wood.
The overall winner in the women's flight was the team of Margaret Dwyer, Karen O'Brien, Mary Scott, Joyce Doran, Barb Nagel and Kim Bradshaw.
Work on the 24th Annual SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic begins in October, and they are seeking a title sponsor for the 2012 event.
Businesses interested in sponsorship can contact Ellen Nesbitt in the Office of College Advancement at 267-3403 or nesbitem@potsdam.edu.
