State Senate Democrats blast Ritchie, Griffo for 'reneging' on property tax relief promises

The state Senate Democratic Conference has blasted St. Lawrence County’s two Republican senators, claiming they reneged on promises for property tax relief.

“Upstate Republicans have a big bark, but they don’t have much of a bite,” said Travis Proulx, spokesperson for the Senate Democratic Conference, in a prepared statement. “Senators Patty Ritchie and Joseph Griffo may enjoy playing lapdog for their downstate political boss, but allowing Republican Leader Dean Skelos to torpedo a property tax cap is a devastating blow to local homeowners desperate for much-needed relief.”

He was referring to a Long Island Newsday article that reported the state “has no concrete plan to tie a tax cap to mandate relief for local governments.”

The story said “there is growing sentiment in the Republican-led chamber that they can’t support one without the other.”

Proulx, in his statement, said Ritchie and Griffo have both advocated for property tax caps. Ritchie represents the western half of St. Lawrence County and Griffo the eastern portion.

“Senate Republicans called themselves ‘heroes of reform,’ and have since reneged on their pledge to clean up Albany through independent redistricting and greater ethical standards,” said Proulx.

“They said they would give upstate a voice, but gutted the constitutional authorities of upstate’s highest ranking official – Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy – and defunded Gov. Cuomo’s regional economic councils.

“Now, these same two senators have broken their promise to provide property tax relief and places the political interests of their downstate pals above the well-being of their constituents.”
