AKWESASNE – A majority of voters in the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe are in support of expansion of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino.
Voting in a referendum in the lobby of the Community Tribal Building on Saturday, 391 voted in favor of the expansion, while 286 cast ballots against the project.
A total of 591 cast ballots on Saturday and another 93 absentee ballots were mailed before the noon deadline. Seven ballots were declared void.
The Tribal Election Board will officially certify the referendum results after a five-day period, pending any appeals, and announce the official results as soon as they are certified.
