ST. REGIS FALLS -- Robert B. Fitzgerald, 81, of St. Regis Falls, New York, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of sexually exploiting a child.
The announcement comes from United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Kevin Kelly, special agent in charge, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Buffalo Field Office.
Federal authorities say Fitzgerald sexually exploited a girl for about, three years and beginning when she was 14 years old. He allegedly photographed and video-recorded the sexual abuse and distributed and sold the child pornography to others. Authorities say on Aug. 9, Fitzgerald possessed a computer that contained videos depicting him sexually abusing the child when she was 17 years old.
If convicted as charged, Fitzgerald faces 15 to 30 years in federal prison, and can also be sentenced to at least five5 years and up to lifetime post-release supervisor.
Fitzgerald appeared Friday for a detention hearing before United States Magistrate Judge Gary L. Favro, and was ordered detained, Jaquith’s office said.
This case is being investigated by HSI and the New York State Police, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Kopita.
